i have a 85HP perkins 4.236 diesel in my 32 foot pleasure craft. after the winter lay up she will not start i removed injectors turned upside down and turned the engine she blowed fuel to the roof. so i got fuel and she turns over fast enough i think. i tried some quick start and she didnt bind or didnt make an offer. i think it maybe my rings and she has no compression.. what is the compression on this engine so i can make up a guage and test it to see if it is my rings or my injectors. thanks in advanced, mitch |

After sitting for awhile the cylinders may be dry and/or the rings may be stuck. A very simple method of sealing the cylinders is to pour some 30 or 4o weight oil into the injector ports. Remember you cannot compress a liquid so do not over due it. You may want to crank over by hand or bump it over with the injectors out. The oils will create a seal and improve the compression. Put in injectors back in place after you are sure that it will turn over completely. Then start the engine normally. If it still won't start spay WD40 into the intake while cranking (never use starting fluid, it can dry the cylinders out and cause the rings to score the liner) WD40 will burn and lubricate. Once you get it started the rings will seat again unless they are worn or damaged. If the engine ran fine when you shut it down for the season it should be fine if you had preserved it correctly. This is a very tough engine and is fairly forgiving. My old 4:236 had 30,000 plus hours on original build and is still running. |
