There's a couple machine shop businesses near Bourne Ma.( they might know if the Sagamore was built in the area) on the cape cod canal. Sagamore is on the east end of the canal. Perhaps the Sagamore was a builder on the entrance to cape cod?? Just speculating..... |

* Bruce Researching these old engine mfgrs is part of the reason my hair turned gray ! Sagamore engines were named for the Street in Lynn, Mass where the mfgr Briggs & Wade was located ! 1906 ad * |

Back in the 70s a Sagamore new in the crate left in the family factory was offered on the Gas Engine magazine and I tried to get it but the family had changed their mind. Don't know what ever did happen to it. I think it was a single. Some you win more you lose. |

* Years ago when I researched Sagamore Engines and found Briggs & Wade the mfgr located on Sagamore street I just assumed that the engine was named after the street but looking closer into the name Sagamore I Found this ! A Sagamore is a paramount chief among the Algonquians or other northeast American Indian tribes. So now I'm thinking the engine and the street in Lynn were named for this definition (Big Chief) ?? * |

* Bruce There was a Mead Engine company in Dayton Ohio in 1911 and they did make marine engines, I have not seen photos but the description says there were actuators on the crankshaft to operate the valves ?? At the turn of the century a very inventive engine designer ( heretofore unmentioned ) by the name of Frank S.Mead he filed and held several engine patents, He was an American citizen but resided in Montreal,Canada at the time. He is in my list and someday I hope to find what actual engines were mfgrd and what names they carried ? The engine in the ad above I believe was this Co. Old Marine Engine Trivia it's like seasoning in soup ! * |
