Hi I "used" to work on these back in 1974-76 in Miami at the River Front. as far as the basic engine it's "just" a Detroit Diesel 6-71 as for the parts hung on the engine to make it into a salt water motor (grey marine) that it may be harder to find parts , but you can look up Southern Diesel and see if they still are in business in Miami and selling parts

jimmys, I still do not have any manuals for this motor. I would like to find a manual as soon as possible. There is a number 6A14662 stamped on the block. Can anybody tell me what year this motor is? Also the valve cover has rounded edges. I think that is a sign of an early motor, is this true?

Jt,..
Yes,..I really reconize your Marine Engine! You have a Early 1940's 64HN-9 Grey Marine 6-71 GM Diesel Marine Engine and I can't quite see, but you must have the Manual "Crash Box" Marine Gear X8708A,..1 1/2 to 1 Ratio and they are still available, through some Marine Diesel Shops hear in Seattle. These Engines are very reliable, but do need a little wave of either to start them sometimes, being a 2 Valve head and lower compression,..compared to the 4 Valve head later production 6-71's. I have a couple 64HN9 Used Heat Exchanger components and parts and even an original twin screw Raw/Sea Water Pump.

IF YOU GOOGLE there's a few that come up including a original one for your engine. but like I said before it's a detroit diesel 6-71 man I threw away tons of those books from garage. never thought anyone would ever need it

are you planning on repairing the engine?

BTW thanks for the memories . it's been a while since I've seen a grey. believe it or not we have a old forklift I've been using for the last 31 years it has a 2-53 running in it. they were generator motors in navy ships. Old MR. Ferguson also had a collection of the ALL aluminum 6-71 engines that came out of mine sweepers he had it all chromed up and a 2-53 too.

sorry for the memory lane

Hey guys thanks for the input. Jimmys, I've never had to use either to get her goin. She starts just fine. Do you know the H.P. rating for this engine? rtoledo, so far there has been no reason to tear her apart and fix anything, she runs like a watch. Memory lane is no problem with me. It's good to hear stories about these engines. I'm glad you got to see the old girl. Well I'm getting ready to go lobstering this season. I hope the Grey Marine 6-71 is as reliable as everybody has told me or should I just put her in a museum?

JT,..
Your Engine is rated 225 HP @ 2100 RPM's and glad to hear that you have never had to use either,..she may of been upgraded to "N" Series Cylinder Kits at one time,..going from 16 to 1 Compression, to 18.7 to 1 and with the N60 or N65 Injectors,...if this so, your HP goes to about 285....Go Lobstering, the Museum can wait!!

You can find a Tach Cable at most Marine supply Stores, cose to a Marina,..or...a AC Delco Tach Supplier you can find online. How about going to a Electronic Tach Sender and Tachometer,..just wiring going to your wheelhouse Instrument Panel and they last allot longer.
