I have a Barber Brothers single cylinder engine, Engine Number 225. It seems to be fairly complete except, except its missing the ignition system. Can anyone furnish me with a photo, or any information regarding the ignition? Also, can anyone know the year of manufacture? Actually any input, HP, RPM, etc, would be helpful and appreciated. Thanks in advanceJerry, Collinsville CT.

Is there a name on the water pump? If the carb is original, you should be able to date it from that. I have seen adv for krice starting in 1909 and going into the middle teens.

Here is a double cylinder with the ignition timer. Timer runs off of a bevel gear near the flywheel. Do not know if this timer is original or was added at a later point. Single could be fitted with a similar timer. I used a Schubler Model D for the carb and have had it runing briefly off the fuel bowl. Had to use a 4 cylinder Distributer cap on it as it was the only cap I could find that fit the distributor. |

* jerryh20 Your single engine Barber Serial #225 would have been mfgrd very close to 1911. This is a 1908-09 copy of a copy but should be readable, its an earlier engine with the drip oiler, your eng is later and has the oil mix tag on it ! Go to search at top of this page and type ignition- your engine looks complete but would require a coil and battery wired up to run, nice complete old Barber !! * |

It is a KRISE carburetor and it has a patent date of Nov. 22, 1910. I dont see any information on the water pump but Ill keep looking. It has a 13 flywheel so by the chart it would be 2.5HP. The oilers have Detroit Lubricator Co. #01 printed on them. Ive attached a close-up photo of the back of the flywheel, and as you can see there is no room for a bevel gear. Theres what looks to be a hard rubber washer with a piece of copper or brass imbedded in it. I searched for Barber Brothers ignition and found the attached sketch on the site. So this motor didnt have any kind of distributor, it had this setup, or something like it?

Jerry-Me thinks there is supposed to be an insulated spring-loaded contact which goes through the hole in the last picture which grounds out the coil to the engine block. Tha handle on that collar moves to adjust the timing. See if the hole has threads in it... |

Jerry, If you set the flywheel with the piston at top dead center and the lever straight up, you will see where the contact has to be set. Based on the wiring sketch it looks like more of a flat spring contact. Hopefully someone on the forum will have a single cylinder Barber with the same setup. Keith |

I'm starting to get the idea of how this system operated. There are no threads in the hole on the collar, so maybe the contact was held in place by a spring clip? All this has been very helpful, and much appreciated. Jerry |
