Hi All,

New poster here. I am trying to ID this motor. I am contemplating getting an early E.M. White motor canoe, the the enclosed picture is of one of the original motors. I am an absolute neophyte regarding antique motors.

What make is this motor, and if available, what do they usually cost? I am trying to decide if this canoe is worth seriously pursuing. The canoe isn't cheap, and if the motor is an arm and a leg, I may have to re-think the whole thing. The canoe needs a total restoration. motor canoe engine

It looks like a Thrall to me. The twins are not as common as the single cylinders, Do you need a Thrall, the Waterman-Arrow motors are similar and more common. If you do a search on the menu at the top you should see some.

I guess it could say Thrall. It seems like there is something in front though, if position is any indicator.

Nailing down price is always a sticky issue. So much depends on whos looking to by it and where its located. Thats a pretty nice looking set up and IMO is worth persuing as you are unlikely to find another that nice for a long time. In the end alot of it comes down to how much your willing/able to pay and how bad you want it. The engine itself in that condition in my area would probably net around $1500 to $2000 though its takes awhile to find a buyer. I have never dealt with old engines etc. to make money I always did it because I enjoy it so price is based off of what I feel is a good price.

Hi Jonathan,

Unfortunately, That picture was only an example of the engine I would need for the canoe I am looking at. The canoe itself is in need of a total restoration, and the motor it currently has in it looks as though it came off of a gas powered centrifugal pump. Engine availability and price will dictate how serious I am about getting the canoe. I am in Nevada, and have never seen anything like one of these motors.

The engine bed and bulkhead that connects to the hull look a bit thin to me.
These engines shake quite a bit, since most do not have balanced crankshafts. Before long you'll have a leaky hull.
A better bet might be a small single cylinder engine
- yes it has less HP but I don't think you are looking for speed, rather a nice cruising experience.
Smaller, single cylinder engines in good condition are much much more plentiful and less expensive - in the $500 range.
Plus, your hull won't get beaten up as much.
If you search through the Boats with old Motors section you'll see examples of nice installations.
