Those of you that attended Calvert and Mystic probably met Jimmy Mathews, usually accompanied by his son Charlie and wife Mary Ann. Jimmy had his morning coffe, went to the store and died while shopping, they said it was instant and he probably never new what happened. He was 93. We always looked forward to seeing him at the shows, he loved to laugh and joke, enjoyed life. He'll be missed. |

Jimmy lived near me and we often saw each other for simply a visit or something engine related. However Jimmy appreciated friendship most of all. When you walked into his shop the enthusiastic Hey Ernie left no doubt that he was glad to have you stop by. We went on many engine road trips together over the years. A couple that stand out were one to western Mass to retrieve a steam engine. There was another to Conn and we came home with a truck load of marine engines. The best part of a visit to Jimmy's shop on a hot summer day was the refrigerator stocked with ice cold Bud in cans. Jimmy was one of the most patient engine restorers I have known. He would come up with parts of an engine that some of us would have just looked and and walked away. A year or 2 or 3 later I would get a call...can you come over and help me start what ever it was. I think the topping in the cake for Jimmy was a 2 cylinder LLoyd that he got from Dick Day 3 or 4 years ago. With assistance from quite a few engine guys he had it well...running...the first summer that he had it. Over the next year or 2 we would see it at various shows in the sort of runs mode. Then last summer at the Mystic Seaport show we got to see the final result of the efforts of all those people. Jimmy had one of the best running small twin cylinder 2 stroke engines I have seen. Just kind of nudge the flywheel and it would start. Oh and lets not forget his son and daughter in law Charlie and Mary Ann. Charlie was always an active part in running Jimmy's engines. However at one point we even got Mary Ann involved in starting Jimmy's St Lawrence. Jimmy will be missed and an engine guy and good friend Ernie |
