Does anyone out there have either pictures or a shop manual of the early prewar Hall Scott Invader engines? I am hoping to see how they were set up when used without the heat exhanger unit as when they were installed in the gold cup, or runabout boats of the 1930s. Any assistance will be much appreciated. |

I have a Hall Scott Invader maintenance manual dated 1943 if this would be of some help. |

If it is dated 1943 then it probably says Hudson Invader 168 and refers to the closed cooling systems. I have the Hudson Invader 168 manuals. If your manual says Hall Scott Invader and shows the the engines without the heat exhanger also, then I could use it and would be happy to buy it if you want to sell it.

Mr. Acierno: I appreciate all comments and opinions. I am not an expert on Gold Cup racing boats, however I am probably the foremost restorer/rebuilder of Hall Scott Engines in the U.S and Canada. Not that it makes any difference.
Perhaps you were not aware the vessel named the Miss Chicago in 1933 and promoted heavily by Hall Scott. I am attempting to attach a copy of the ad I found. Perhaps it is just a race boat and not a Gold Cup boat. In the event the picture does not upload and you have an interest in seeing the ad, let me know you email address and I will gladly send it. |

I will check my library for the earliest Invader manual. But I thought the Invader started around 1935 and the Defender in 38 or 39.
I know that Invaders were used in Belle Isle Bearcats and other big boats. I would have a problem seeing one in ANY race boat due their weight, size and lack of HP compared to lighter motors.
Now the Hall-Scott LM-6, LM-6A and the Supercharged LM-6 were raced routinely through the 20s.
How is your parts inventory on Defenders?

Hello Lew: Thank you for writing. Actually the Ivader saw it first product at the end of 1930 (which caused some sources to say it began production in 1931. This Miss Chicago had an Invader engine and a number of Hutchinson custom built triples had them too as well as the Belle Isle boats. A friend of mine is restoring LC Smiths 1930, 30 foot racing triple cockpit that was custom built for him by Hutchinson. We have the original photographs of the boat as deliverd and it has an Invader Engine rather than the LM-6. I have the original engine in my shop. Mr. Smith wanted to run the boat on Elliot Bay and so had the heat exhanger and the water pump for the closed cooling system added. On a side note I am interested in buying LM-6 engines when the can be found too. I dont have parts for V-12 defender however I do get a lot of emails regarding those brutes for sale and parts too from time to time. What parts are you looking for?

Sounds like a great and fun project as long as you are prepared for the weight!
I have sold 2 Defenders and still have one complete 1940 and a bunch of parts. I know that the intake plenum is always in demand as they rot out when not drained correctly.
LM-6 and 6A's are in short supply. there are a few around but most people do not want to let go of them. And parts are always in need. We currently have 2 running on Tahoe with some spare parts to keep them up.
Would love to see some pics of the boat and engine.
