I purchased at the Warner-Mecum boat auction in Winstead Minn. (LOT S118 IN THE WARNER CATALOGUE AT THE MECUM WEB SITE FOR PHOTOS OF THE BOAT AND THE ENGINE) a reproduction 18 foot launch with a one cylinder Termatt and Monahan engine. This site has given me a wealth of information on starting it up and I have successfully fired it and it runs!! (Thanks for all the technical postings about starting old one cylinders) The only problem is that it does not circulate cooling water. When I first launched it, only exhaust gas and not water came out of the exhaust hole on side of boat. When I unhooked the hose from the intake and put it in a pail of water back in the garage, it blew bubbles rather than sucking water through the engine while running. What am I doing wrong? I do not want to overheat the engine. |

There are a couple of styles of water pump on the T&M engines. Most used an external check valve on the water inlet and the outlet check was a ball at the top of the pump. Weather the check valves are internal or external make sure they work properly and this will most likely take care of your problem.

Thanks for the quick response. I removed the push rod that moves up and down and although there is a circular piece of brass at the top of the pump, there is no ball inside. IN fact, I can find no check valves at all when examining the inlet and the outlet. I wonder if I am missing the ball as I started the engine again and using a bucket of water and a clear tube, it continues to blow air rather than suck water up.
I did read the patent application posted in these threads for the new improved condenser filed in 1906 by Louis Monahan that "is an attachment for muffling the noise and cooling or condensing the exhaust gases in gasoline engine", however, could not see anything about check valves either in the drawings or the narrative.
I think I will next take more of the pump apart and post some pictures. Thanks for your interest and help.

Thanks so much for your help. Yes, it was something simple. I did not put back the little catch valves for the water pump (they look like little upholstery screws and were in a small can stored in the bottom of the boat).
I have posted a clip on youtube if anyone wants to see the boat and motor working on Ten Mile Lake in northern Minnesota.

Looks like you got rid of the bark of the exhaust and it's now just a very nice pop pop pop.
Congrats - I'll bet you're looking forward to warmer days and liquid, not solid water.
