* The day after Christmas a visitor came to my North Florida Barn /Shop bearing gifts, not the one you might have in mind with the white beard, red suit and sleigh with reindeer on his way back to the North pole, but an even better one for us grown up kids ! 1.Jb Castagnos bringing an Old Marine Engine in the back of his Chevy 3/4 ton pickup and getting ready to unload the old relic ! The one on the tailgate is a Lockwood Ash crankcase with bearings poured and machined ! 2. Syracuse Three Cylinder about 1913 ! 3. Engine comes to rest at its Retirement home in Florida. 4. Always thought the Heads on these engines were cylinder heads, but they are headless engines and the head is cover to the water jacket ? 5.Aft and showing the JB hand made triple timer. 6. Port Side how about that custom made JB triple intake manifold ? 7. Port side 2 8.Tag 9.Starboard Side 10. Starboard side 2 -- I bought this engine several months ago sight unseen knowing it had been disassembled for several yrs and missing some pieces, A big thanks again to RB Price for driving across upstate New York to get it and then taking it to the Mystic Museum show, also thanks to Bruce Hall who after seeing the engine couldn't believe that it wasn't going to his collection but helped Rb load it nevertheless !! --- My good fortune was that the engine and box of parts were put on the ground at the Mystic show next to JB's trailer ------ Back in Louisiana Jb kept looking at the engine and his curiosity as to what it would take to put the old timer back together once again and that inborn trait to hear it roar to life got the better of him so after many weeks of hard work, mechanical ingenuity, and a lot of patience the old Syracuse did indeed start and run once again as it was designed to do 100 years ago ! Great Company ( Thanks again JB ), Great Old Marine Engine, Great Christmas and a lot of fun ! just had to share it here. * |

* Post Script JB didn't leave the Sunshine state with an empty truck, after unloading the Syracuse 670 Lbs it became a concern that the truck might not handle very well on the road back to Donaldsonville so we looked around and found an even older and much more involved restoration project to add some weight ? hopefully some photos of the progress on this one will get posted here ?? Great Stuff !! * |

Thanks Richard, it was good to see you, enjoyed the visit, appreciate the "project engine". The photo at Mystic looks like a reversed negative. Actually when the cylinders were put on for transport they were on reversed and the exhaust is upside down, That's why the water inlet pipe is in the air. |

Thanks Roger, this engine may have had three 1 1/2" inch carbs, I didn't have any, fabbed up the pvc manifold to use one 1 1/4" Schebler to run it. Keith, there are a few videos on telephones, they tried emailing me, nothing came through, I'll try to get them downloaded. After much cranking, barring over one stroke at a time, and only a little success, I made a set of deep reach spark plugs like my Fisherman needs. These are like the old Maytag extended plugs. The plugs on the side of the motor have to go through the water jacket, they were in a pocket and wouldn't ignite the mixture. We got it to crank like this, but still a lot of hard work for a little return. We coupled it to a tractor PTO, spinning it took a lot of choking before it kicked off. Ran it a few times like this and was able to bar start it several times that evening and the next day. I'm sure running it would help seat the rings and limber it up a little more. |

Richard or JB. Can you explain the double sets of ports in the cylinder wall and the port on the piston? I don't recall seeing such an arrangement. miro |

Miro, look at the cylinder base, there's no transfer port from the crankcase. The transfer port is a short bulge between the two sets of ports in the upper part of the photo. When the piston gets to bdc, the slot in the piston lines up with the lower ports, the upper ports are cleared by the piston, the charge enters and hits the deflector. The other side has the third port to the carb and the exhaust port above it, when at tdc the third port is cleared by the piston skirt. |

They must have had good foundry men to cast those pistons. I suspect that carbon build up could have been an issue with these engines. miro |
