Hi Folks, I'd appreciate any help and info on the attached reverse gear. It came attached to an Andres Marine 1955 Packard 320 cid V8 marine conversion motor that I acquired at Ladd's Boat Yard in Stockton CA. No casting numbers or data plate are present. I'd like to get some idea of the Mfg, year, correct lube fluid and capacity, etc. Also need a new top cover gasket if available. It is a 1:00 to 1:00 ratio with a 1 inch shaft collar.

Looks like a 35XE Paragon.. to know for sure remove the top cover and read the numbers off of the round drum. If it's a Paragon it will have a model & Serial number. If it is a paragon I can Help with parts. My Phone is 843-822-1019 Even if it is not a paragon I will still try to help you. |

Looks as if the dipstick is missing......use SAE 30W motor oil in units of that vintage. If You can get the Serial Number I can tell you the dipstick part number.....may be even find one.
Also the Serial Number can help pin down the year.

Thanks for the info Chris. The numbers on the drum are: 643B 85586K
As well as the bolt holes and vent, there are two other ports in the top cover. There was a coiled copper line extending to the bottom of the case in the rear hole and exiting over the top of the cover. It was crushed when I got the unit (you can see it on the ground in the bottom left photo). I am guessing it may have gone back into the forward hole on the cover and intended as an oil cooler? It was broken/cut and not connected to anything when I got the unit. Perhaps one of the holes was originally for a dipstick?

Well it is probably NOT the 35EX Paragon because the numbers on the drum are not right for it to be a paragon. Post a picture with the cover off of it and I might still know what it is. |

Hi Chris, I looked at some S-N gear photos on line and found none similar. I did find a photo of a Capitol that is somewhat but not exactly the same.

If it is a Capitol then it is easy to ID the unit by the part numbers on the parts. I have a list of the old part numbers and we can ID the unit that way. It might be a Packard Transmission I will be looking in to that. |
