I see a reference to the Brigham in Grayson, no reference to it in the BYB, and a one line reference in The Motor Boat that simply says the company purchased a 22' launch to demonstrate the marine motors they make. Does anyone have a reference to more information on this engine? |

* Searcher, It's comforting to see that others are obsessed with the preoccupation of obscure marine engine mfgrs, Brigham is one of those. at least Stan Grayson mentioned the name there are a few hundred more that don't even have that distinction ? As I research I add bits of info into my data base and every once in a while the info gels and an answer appears, Brigham engines is still in the bits and pieces stage ? These are my notes maybe someone can fill in additional data ? Henry Martyn Brigham 1860-1938 attorney and inventor Brooklyn,N.Y. Held many patents, number 1,114,222 Oct 20,1914 carburetor for combustion engine. Late 1911 Oscar Grieff, Arnold M.Brobat, Henry M.Brigham formed National Boat Co. New York, 27 William Street,Cold Spring, Putnam County. Early 1911 Oscar Grieff involved with forming the Racine Boat Mfging Co. of New York . Racine Boat mfg co. got involved with expansion into National Boat Co. in several states and it became their economic collapse. Last Racine Boat Co. yachts actually made by Charles Seabury Co. of New York. Brigham engine for sale in classifieds 1914 Motorboat Jan pg 126 4 1/2 Hp single. If you were up early all this should help you go back to sleep ! * |

The Brigham reference I found was in the July 25, 1906 issue of The MotorBoat in a column titled SPLASHES AND SPLURGES on Page 46. It reads: "South Cushing, Me. - Capt. F. L. Maloney has purchased a motor dory with a 4-h Brigham motor". At least that little blurb pushes the date of the Brigham back a little if nothing else. Obviously, I was hoping it might be a Maine engine that I could add to my documentation of Maine engine manufacturers. However, Brigham is not a family name much found here so I was not optimistic. |

* The earlier 1906 date sheds a little more light on the subject, crossing of names and 1906 found that Dec of 1905 Henry M.Brigham was on the board of directors of the Matheson Motor Car Company ( in Massachucetts). High probability that the marine engines were made in that facility ?? http://digital.hagley.org/custom/mathesonauto.php * |
