After an eight year delay I am finally getting things done on my old boat and palmer, sn. 3631756. I had to put this on hold but now the carb has been rebuilt and all is well with the engine so far. I would like to paint it close to the original color and replace the impeller for the water pump. I figure the impeller is shot as this has been stored for decades now. Any thoughts on where to get one. Thanks, I will post pics as soon as i figure out my smart phone which makes me really feel stupid sometimes. |

Since it appears that you are from CT why don't you bring it to Mystic next month. Or at least come down for the Antique Marine Engine Show. Sign up info is on the OME front page Ernie |

Thanks for posting the name plate. I will make every effort to aattend the boat show next month. I don't know how far along the boat will be but if she has paint she will be there as a work in progress. |

A public thanks to Ernie for helping post the pics. I just can't seem to get them to post from my computer or phone. Files too large. Anyways, the jug is off and being honed to get rid of a tight spot at the bottom of the stroke. The rest of the engine is cleaned out with risloneL (not running, just by hand) and will be flushed out. There are a couple of cracks in the water jacket that we fixed with JB Weld and when it runs it will get a fresh coat of paint (grey of course) and will make its appearance at the show next month in Mystic. The boat is still a tedious task of stripping the inside with a heat gun etc. 104 degrees this weekend but the work goes on. I look forward to meeting some of you in August. Do you guys have a booth or some way of putting a face with the names? See you then, Rick |

Rick, The engine exposition is in the ship yard which is a small area (not like trying to find someone at the Seaport somewhere) Just ask and someone will point one of us out to you. Most of us know everyone or most everyone as the is the 20th year. As to your pics they are huge and not really a JPG format. I have to open them with MS pic and fax and save a a bitmap then save that as a JPG and then resize it. The max size here is 100K Ernie |

I have the engine running but it needs to have the bore honed better that I could and new rings. I have to find a head gasket or see if gaskets to go has them. I could send them mine to copy. Here is a link to youtube for a short clip of it running. Too much blow-by to bring to Mystic but I will attend to learn more and say hi.http://youtu.be/lWD_qNjRlw8 |

Rick I bought 6 BH gaskets in case other might need them. I paid $18.00 each and they are very good gaskets. I will send you one for $18.00 plus mailing which won't be much and you won't have to deal with Pay Pal etc. |

Neat! We are fearuring Palmer Engines at Mystic this year. Please just bring it running or not to help with the Palmer display. We don't care if it has blow by. Also there may be a breather problem as it has a check valve in it and if that is the issue one of us can assist. |

Ok guys, you have me motivated. Rick, I think I have your address or you can email it to me and I will fire off a check tomorrow or send it with a total and I will send it out asap. I just dropped the jug off at the mechanic who will lap or mill the bore, set up new rings and a new piston if needed. I do need some help in the right gasket material for the valve cover and block-to-jug gasket. It seems to be about .030 paper material. I can get any material I need so let me know from your experience what is best. I should have the jug back in a day or two so I will have her together by next weekend and ready for paint. I will send in my registration for the engine show but I can only be there on Sunday. I look forwards to meeting you all and to thank you for your support and information. Got to get a priming cup too and I found those on line for 22 bucks. See you all in a couple of weeks. I have to get back to stripping the inside of the boat now. That will be ready for next year. Thanks, Rick |

The jug needs to be bored out. I have to either locate an oversized piston or sleeve the cylinder. My machinist feel that sleeving the bore is the most cost effective but wants to know the thickness of the sleeve wall. Less than two weeks to Mystic and the pressure (in a good way) is on. Calling all experts to help as this is my first old engine. The sleeve seems to make the most sense I just didn't give much thought to the wall thickness. |

Rick, Call Rays Auto Parts in Little Compton, RI. He will most likely have the piston you need. Make sure he knows it is a "flat top" Ray Helger's World-o-car Parts telephone number is (401) 635-4849. |

It won't be a quick visit unless he is real busy. I hope you like outboards as well as cars. By the way if he doesn't have a "flat top" one the ones with a dome can be cut flat if need be. |

Rick, Just saw Ernie's reply. Ernie is a knowledgeable man, but I wholeheartedly disagree on this subject. Don't cut a domed piston top flat!!! It will be very thin at center and probably burn thru. It gets the hottest at center. Look inside the crown and notice it's also domed. We measure crown thickness when any special milling takes place. Get the flat top. David |

Well, Ray has flat top pistons and being a marine engine guy with hundreds of engines he understood why I only needed one piston. I look forward to meeting him and getting some chowder when in RI. That is the only real chowder. I may even have the paint dry in time for the show. Thanks to all, more to follow. |

David, I had 2 dome top ones. I cut the first piston in half to see how thick it was. The inside is the same on both the flat top and the dome top. Ernie |

I have several oversize Ford pistons for the BH if you have no luck. I bought 6-8 NOS pistons and used one for my 1952 BH. I'd have to check tomorrow for the + sizes that I have. I think I have several sizes. If you bore/hone, don't you need to know when cyclindar is finished before you select piston size? |

Thanks John. My mechanisc bored and honed the jug already to determine the piston size. I have to put some trust in his ability. We will see what the outcome is. I do appreciate the offer...Rick |

John, Usually you bore on the premise that an available piston can be utilized. Example: Should a dial indicator show no wear at bottom of cyl and the top area shows .012" wear, you might do a trial bore (centering on unworn area) figuring on a .020 oversize piston. You would stop boring at .017" over std bore size. Assuming all wear cleared, then order your piston. Measure it. Pistons as well as all parts can vary. It may be marked +.020 but may be +/- a thou or more!!.Having mic'd the piston in the mfg's noted spot, you can now hone that last .003" or so to have the suggested factory clearance. Never bore "to size". Always leave at least .003 or more for progressive grit honing. All piston mfg's have different specs. One size does not fit all. I do many cyls calling for .0005"(that's a half of one thou). Others that call for .016". David |

BH series owners, Be aware that the Ford type piston comes with 2 different depth types of ring grooves called shallow or deep. Measure groove depth. Shallows go in .170-.180" The deep go in .190 or more. Use the correct type. Both have been available for years. David |

Ernie, Tried to post a reply but lost it. 2nd try. The inside of crown can vary amongst mfgs. That's why I posted the caution. Crown thickness is quick and easy to check. All pistons on all engines I build get checked. Valve pocket areas are vulnerable on OHV engs. David |

It is getting down to the wire. I thought I would have the cylinder in my hands today until the machinist called to ask the piston to bore clearance size. That is not in the manual so he got a "duh" out of me. One call to David Dunbar and he called me back with the information so I will have it on Friday morning. We will put it together, a little touch-up paint and some more JB Weld for the head and get her up to Mystic on Sunday. Save me a spot. There is still some ooze from around the spots I filled with the epoxy. It is probably the corrosion that can not be readily stopped as this was a salt water engine. I will run it as long as possible until I find a fresh water engine. A little hectic now but it is all worth it. Thank you again David for the response in my time of "duh" See you on Sunday. Rick |

Just and update on the boat. Still stripping paint and getting closer to paint and caulk. The engine still has some leaks out of the head but I can live with it for now. To get the boat where I would like it I will be looking for a new/used head that was not in salt water or a fresh water engine for the future. I will be checking the web and search for these, either parts or a complete engine for a reasonable market price. If anyone has parts, engine or information please let me know. More pics to follow as the paint goes on. P.S. Mystic was a blast! |

I sent you an email Ernie with my phone # too. I look froward to hearing about the engine. Just finished all the sanding on the boat and will now seal, caulk paint and so forth. At least this is the fun part of putting it back together. Hard to believe but painting is really more fun than stripping, scraping and sanding. |

Splashed the boat in the CT river today for its maiden voyage. All went pretty well but the siphon feed for the fuel is too iffy and the engine stalled if the bulb wasn't squeezed. Got about 1800 rpms. With a generator and five people in the boat I don't know if this is top-end. I do need some info on in-line fuel pumps and the recommended fuel pressure. I found one that is 2.5 to 4 psi. Any suggestions would be welcome on top-end and fuel pressure. P.S. It was a blast to hear the putt putt and put it in the water after 35 years. Break-neck speed of about 6 knots. |
