Need help. Was motoring and heard a noise from the engine compartment or below the rear of the hull. Discovered that I still had forward gear but minimal reverse. Engine is a palmer P-60 with direct drive in an Islander 30 sail boat. Gear shift lever moves forward as before, but not much backward movement of the lever to engage reverse. What things shoud I check ? Will check for cable corrosion (will disconnect cable from transmission lever to see if it still refuses to go into reverse), possibility of a line on the prop shaft (will check with mirror on a pole),oil level today. I am the original owner of this boat for 39 years and the transmission worked well until now. If needed can parts for this transmission be purchased? I believe it is a Paragon OXB. Has anyone removed their trans from engine? Difficulty? Thanks in advance for your help. Dean Paul Milwaukee, WI 414-588-6464 [email protected] |

First thing which comes to my mind is you need to tighten the reverse gear band on top of the reverse gear drum. This causes the band to grip the rotating reverse gear main drum and causes the prop shaft to reverse direction. Note the nut flats are gripped by a wire spring which hold it in place. Take it easy and take up a turn on the nut and see if that improves reverse. Don't tighten the nut so much it keeps the reverse band tight all the time. Only when you hold the reverse lever in reverse should it grip the drum tightly. Let go of the handle and the reverse gear should become neutral. |
