Sometimes it all comes together! Awhile back, I bought a 6 HP light engine that was virtually new. The issue: no flywheel. The owner said they removed it and hid it as they were getting pressure from the scrap drive people in WW2. He could not find the wheel. About a month ago, I was contacted as the wheel had turned up hidden under a pile of lumber! Once more, the two pieces are reunited and ready to run! Thank you everyone for all of your help with this engine! Brandon Pineo |

Hello, I've got an old lathrop make and break 5hp. I'd like to remove the flywheel to paint it. I made a tool to fit in the two holes, but I wonder what direction it's threaded? Is it standard thread? Thanks if you have the info! |

Hey Lee, thank you very much. Just to be certain, you mean right to tight, just like a standard nut? Also, is it a taper, or keyed? This little engine is a lot of fun. Already got it turning over. In theory, it could run. Its all there, just a crack in the water jacket. I'm going to make it into a display. Not sure what year it is, but I bet it's really early. |

Sorry Jim it's dark here now I just managed to get the nut loose counterclockwise and it got dark. My manuals show it as a tapered shaft. My memory was while I was lapping in the new rings the nut came off and so did the flywheel but I can't rember if there was a keyway. I'm sad to here your nut going to get your motor in running condition as I use them in boats. look at http://www.flickr.com/photos/54426805@N04/5923992423/in/photostream copy whole line not just highleted part to see mine running. send richard durgee the serial # and he can give you a good guess he compiles a list to track dates good luck Lee |

Hey Lee. I've got a picture of the data plate I'll put on here tomorrow. What would you do about the crack water jacket? I'd love to know more about it. It was purchased in mobile al. New, the data plate says something to the effect of made by lathrop for xxxxx marine co. Some guys that have lived here forever remember it in an old skiff. It was used to drag around lumber like mahogany. I'll try to get the old company's name, but it lived in Pensacola bay all its life. Amazing the quality of iron then. 100 years in salt water and it's amazingly decent. A few of the glasses are cracked on the oilers. I'll need to find replacements. Was something like that a direct drive, or did it have reversing gear? |

I'm a youngster here. Dick Day and Richard are the keeper of the records. Lathrops were made in Mystic Conn. with in site of the Mystic Martime Museum. I've found a mason jar with the top and bottom cut off and sanded flat fit the big oiler but I'm sure there are others here that can be more help. Richard has a thread here lathrop serial number you should post you plate number there. the engines run in both direction shut it down and catch it just as it stall and it will run backwards giving reverse no nuteral. a lumber skiff would be a common use for such an engine.
