Paul, That is a great looking old marine engine !

My info is limited to North American eng mfgrs. I did put the name Castlenau in to see if maybe a tie to any names but nothing came up !

I have seen some really cool European and Asian countries old marine engines but have not seen any listings or books with much info ?

I posted additional pictures of the head assemblies on the picasa site. So far, the threads are all metric, many fine threads on the crankcase covers (5-6 mm). The bore is 75mm. Further searching on the net says it may be connected with Albert Couach who was a marine engine/boat pioneer from Arcachon, FR. Very well made; there are 5 main bearings on the crank. Boxed bronze bearings on the con rods which are round with flat ends to bolt the brasses to. I have to remove the lower rod bearings off the crank to get the cylinders off to push out the pistons. Not rust stuck, just stuck from sitting for many years. The bores are all in great shape all things considered. So if anyone has info on Albert Couach, let me know. Apparently his son makes some very high-end modern boats.

I put a few oz of TapMagic Pro-tap in the bores last week and let it sit. Tonight, on a whim, I gave the flywheel a few tugs and it broke free! Will make disassemble sooo much easier.

Paul, Never heard of using TapMagic Pro Tap. Have you used this before?

Keith- I use it all the time to unstick rusted nuts and pistons. Put some on the offending nuts, apply some heat and reapply. Usually they let go. The active ingredient dissolves rust. If it is really stuck, you have to use the kiln treatment. Be sure to use the boidegradeable Pro-Tap and not the regular tap magic.

Posted some additional pictures on the Picasa site. More dis-assembly progress. Cylinders are in for bake-out to remove carbon and water jacket rust. Finally got the block split open- you would not believe all the blind bolts and nuts in this thing.

More pictures of the Castelnau on the link at top of thread. I'm in the assembly process. I do have to recast the heads but should be straightforward. Cart done... need to make oversize wrist pins and recut the ring grooves. Got some neat pix of other Castelnau engines from Noel in the Arcachon area. Hope to have it ready for Calvert.

Getting some of the big stuff behind me. Today the clutch and reversing gear went on. Got the correct 30 degree valve seat angle set and tested to re-cut the valve faces. Castelnau Moteurs

Thanks for the kind words Rich- Check out the link at the top of the thread- many more pix. I confess George Coates gave me a BUNCH of help making all the bolts on his CNC and lots of neat tips. He also had me manning the turret lathe making the nuts- way cool stuff. The 303 hardware really set it off. The clutch and reversing gear really cleaned up well- that spring on #2 plug needs to go into one of the drive dogs on the planetary as a shock absorber. I am still insearch of a carb for it- possibly an early Solex. Mag is an Eismann which was associated with the French firm Lavalette.

It's looking good Paul. That's the only engine I've ever seen with a valve arrangement like that.

Beautiful job! Arcachon is port on the SW coast of France, west of Bordeaux.

I see you are already on a French forum about this motor, you should also try the UK Stationary Engine forum if you haven't already. They're a lot closer than we are to the Gironde.

Got the lion's share of the heads finished this weekend. Still waiting on a metric die to thread the top nuts and sink the holes to match up with the holes in the block + bores- way too cold to mess with it today. Mag mount height adjusted; still a coupling disk to make.

This is what probably put the girl out to pasture- water leaking into the cylinder- or gasses into the coolant? It has opened up on sitting- no doubt some salty rust in there!

Gents- I am still looking for the correct carb for this engine. From the contacts in France, and from the existing mount, it appears to be a side-draft Solex of 3/4-7/8" throat diameter. Time period is early to mid 20's. If you have something which may fit the bill, send me a pm and we'll discuss.

Le Castelnau lives! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLtSQIh8hFI
Minor issues to attend to- timing a bit off. Still not bad for its' first run in who knows how long.

Thanks for the kind words Rich. I put a muffler on it today and advanced the timing ~15 degrees. Wow, what a difference. Lot less heating of the coolant- a soft purr instead of raspy bark.
