Palmer Model D 1328318 1918 for OME 06-17-2011
There are now three known Palmer Bros. Model D Marine Engines.
One D has no serial number. One D in a museum has a strange serial number 34810 which fits no known Palmer serial number system.
Serial number D 1328318 fits the serial number system Palmer Bros. and the follow on company The Palmer Engine Co. used from 1908 until 1965 in which the last two digits of the serial number are the year the engine was ready for shipment. In 1965 for unknown reasons the system was changed to the last digit of the serial number.
The Palmer Engine Co. closed its door in 1971. This 1918 serial number clearly fits in the known production year serial numbers for 1917-1919.
There are 6 known Palmer Bros. Model DS. The added S stood for stationary versions of the marine engine. Basically the marine engine was mounted in a cast base. In some versions both farm style flywheels were utilized in others one flywheel was the marine style and the other a farm style. Flyball governors, thermo-syphon cooling with the fuel tank mounted in the top of the cooling tank were provided. Flat belt drive pulleys were provided.
The following are the known Model DS. Two have no serial number. One DS 323 fits no known Palmer serial number system. A number of Palmer engines fit this pattern but no logical pattern seems to follow which would relate to year of manufacture.
The following numbers clearly fit the dating system. It is interesting they all happen to fall in 1912.
DS537512, DS648812, DS658812
It might be noted the earliest Palmer Bros. serial number known to date is for a
Model M-1553-08. 1908 Next oldest serial number is for a Model C marine engine C-032809 1909
One Model B marine engine has 1899 stamped on the end of the crankshaft and the owner has seen the documentation on this engine. No other engine so marked has been reported to date. |
