I recently bought a 1953 Lyman Islander with a Gray model 620 motor converted to 12 volts. I got it started, but after trying it again it would not turn over. I was able to jump directly to the starter to make sure the engine was OK and it did start that way (yes I pulled the cable off as soon as it started). I rewired it as it had old wiring and didn't help. I did see smoke from the voltage regulator but I'm reluctant to replace it not knowing if something else caused it and will smoke another one. Does anyone know of a troubleshooting procedure so I can propperly narrow it down to the failed component? There's not much too it but I don't want to cause any more damage.

Larry,
Apply 12volts to the small terminal on the starter solenoid. If it spins it is in the circuit before the solenoid(Starter switch, wiring) If it does nothing try replacing the solenoid. |
