I have one. It's not Lockwood but similar. I also have a volt meter of the same style. I would call the amp meter a "shunt" meter and it is put across the battery just like a volt meter. (in paralel not in series with an external load like an amp meter would normally be used) It just measures the available amps across a shunt or load. (whatever it's internal load is) I would not put it across 12 volts. Mine works up 6 volts. Hope this helps Ernie |

I believe the real purpose of the ampmeter portion was to test the output of the typical No. 6 dry cell. A good one should be momentarily test about 20+ amps. Don'test but for a moment as you are draining the life out of the battery. The voltage measurement would be around 1.5 for a single cell. 6 volts for a hot shot battery and 7.5-9 volts for the typical 5 to 6 No. 6 dry cells in series for a Make and Break engine. Many of us had them as kids to test our dry cell batteries for filaments of our homemade "junkadyne" receivers. In the early years all self respecting owners with one lungers in their boats had them as a normal and essential part of the tool kit. So much for history as I lived it. |
