I have a pair of Graymarine engines in my 32" Trojan
1962 fireball V8 178hp flywheel forward # S6688-1
are these engines AMC? where can i get parts timing gear sets etc.... |

Most likely they are Rambler/AMC 287CID. Internal parts are often the same as automotive. Search in HEMMINGS the old car book. |

Thanks Jim I thought so but i kept seeing "fireball" as a GM engine in Wikipedia anyway thank you for the help

The Graymarine Fireball V-8C 178 was only a 250 Cubic inch American Motors Corp. based engine.
Fireballs were also built in 287,& 327 cubic inch models.
But the 178 HP models were only 250 cubic inches.
This I know for sure as fact.
It was a very good engine.
They were built & sold from 1957- 1968 only.
Later Graymarine engines were not based on the AMC base auto engine.
Dad & I owned one for over 30 years.
I have many old NEW & older Graymarine Fireball parts just sitting on our old spares shelf in our basement.
Call me with you needs.
I can supply much information also.
NAPA Auto stores sell the timing chains & gear sets.
They are known for streaching and throwing off your engine timing & performance.
The large cam gear with nylon plastic teeth is a weak link also.

There should be a brass engine ID tag that will give you the engine data.
Graymarine used some odd carburator combiations such single & dual Carter 1 barrel YH side-drafts, carter 2 barrels, and carter AFB/AVS 4 barrels.
What does the ID tag say on your Fireball & what is it's carb set-up ?
This will help pin-down what you really have there. |

The engines have "YH" side draft carbs the tag on the intake manifold has the # S6688-1 it is a 31" 1962 Trojan im still not really sure what model it is.
I was getting ready to pull the star, engine to change the main seals and pan gaskets to stop an oil leak, ten the timing change jumped a tooth ih the port engine, so i need to nail this all down and find the right parts |

Your engine is a 1956-1968 AMC V-8 engine.
Timing Morse Chain & gearsets can be bought at NAPA auto parts and also Chrysler/Jeep Dealers.
The original camshaft gears were aluminum or pot-metal with nylon plastic teeth .
They often break & the chains get very loose . |
