I just found a 3 hp Portage Reversible Engine S/N 516 and was wondering if anyone has one? The lever that moves the cam is missing and the water pump has had some poor repair work done otherwise it appears to be in pretty good shape and has some compression to boot. If anyone has one I would sure appreciate seeing what the cam shift lever looks like so I can make a good match. Would the reverse action take place while the engine is at a slow idle or would you have to stop the engine and then shift the cam?

Looks like a nice find Dick, seems to be in good shape. Richard Durgee sent me the patent info on it, I did a quick lookover on Google Patents # 854550, it sheds a lot of light on it. From the looks of it I think you will be able to kill the engine, release the cam gear allowing it to retard 90 degrees, flip the timer 90 degrees, and release the kill switch. This is very similar to reversing the Fisherman, I can get it to reverse most of the time, espescially after a practice run or two. Looks like a nice winter project. |

How is the valve timing altered for astern on this engine?? Were there any other direct reversing 4 strokes other than the Fisherman? If so; were they of the atmospheric inlet valve type too?, as otherwise the cam-reversing gear would get a bit complex? I think one of you had a clip on youtube of reversing the Fisherman and, from memory, could/ should have mentioned this fantastic feature in it's heading. |

Go to Google Paatents and enter the # 854550. It will bring up the patent on the reversing mechanism. I have a Fisherman ad from 1916 that says "the only reversible 4 cycle", Don't know if Portage was still in business then. The Portage and Fisherman both have atmospheric intake, if not for this the cam lobes would have to be reconfigured. The Atlas Imperial Diesels used two camshafts, the lifters were racked from one to the other. |
