I have to remove a 50hp perkins diesel engine from my 1973 33ft morgan sloop. Has any one have ideas or exp. should i cut the deck or piece it out? |

I would go to great lengths to avoid cutting the deck.
When I removed my MD17c from my sailboat I used a come-a-long attached to the boom. I attached the topping lift and main halyard to the aft end of the boom for support. When the engine cleared the cabin top I swung the boom over the side and lowered it onto a piano mover on the dock.
I think I had to remove the tranny. Are you going to replace the engine or re-build and re-install?

If you have the courage and the means to put it back, cut the cockpit soul sounds good to me, if you have a pedistal to deal with you will possibly find rot anyway good time to fix. You get a streight pull then and right back in. The less I have to do IN the boat the better when it's turing wrenches. I have done a few sailly boat repowers and each is different depending on how it all went together to start. Let me know Peter |

I would go along with cutting the deck, that is the standard practice, and if you are replacing the engine you do not want to strip the new engine to get it in, but only remove what is needed.
