Steve Marsh:
Great looking sloop. Clean engine set up. I have a 2 H on a 33 ft Atkin schooner. My 2H has the starter on the other side of the engine. How do you cool your engine. I do not see the water pump set up.

ALL: Has anyone run across a shop manual for Sabb?
I have the operator manual and spare parts manual. Bill Miller- North American dealer has sent a few pages on " Shop Notes" when I did a valve job. I have asked Norway but got no response.

Thanks. Jim- [email protected]

Jim- The sabb g has a small water pump on the driveshaft, which is also the camshaft. It's behind the starter.
Shop manual- I don't think there is one. The operators manual covers just about everything the owner can do and a machine shop should be able to handle the rest. For a model G, the local marine diesel service shop wouldn't touch it but I found a place that rebuilds engines for oval track racing, they knew what to do and machined an exhaust valve seat. It's run fine ever since, originally it was only hand cranked but later a bosch starter was hooked up.

Exhaust Manifold- SABB
My 2H cracked last year but fortunately I had already bought a back up engine- in better shape than what is in my boat. You have a $900 problem. A good cast iron welding shop might be able to cut out the bad part and weld back plate steel.
When you reinstall, maybe sure you put in a flexible section of the 1.5” exhaust pipe ( Truck parts supply store) and that condensation will run away from the engine ( that was my problem)

I want to buy a well running Sabb 2H to replace the one I ruined. They're great little engines and mine had low hrs but now siezed due to water permeation from leaving open sea cock over winter. A stupid mistake I know. Very costly to r/r parts etc. Would like to install in my sailboat w/variable pitch prop & wiring ready to go.

WHAT WAS SEIZED
You did not mention what was seized. The year before I bought my Atkin Schooner, it had sunk on its mooring and the boat sat out of water for a good 8 months. the clutch case had salt water still in it when I got to it. One of our expert members in this site, Matt Morehouse, [email protected], put me on to buying several gallons of Kano Sili Kroil. I soaked for a month the clutch housing, cylinders and anyplace else I could not find diesel fuel or oil.-Everything freed up, I changed oil the first year maybe 5 times and engine ran for another 10 years until last year it became addicted to Marvel Mystery Oil as a requirement to seal the rings on days lower than 70F.

Sabb 2H overhaul.
I am in the middle to overhauling a 2H. I agree it is fantastic engine. I just ordered cylinder sleeves, rings,etc.- yes expensive but not unreasonable.(Sabb AMERICA. Bill Miller, (352) 589-2882,[email protected]) 8 years ago I bought a spare 2H from Pat's Marine Diesel, 206-285-0184, [email protected], Pat Disjardon. He has another 2H- both came from FL. Pat's engine was in better shape than my boat engine- but still it needs sleeves. Be patience in dealing with Pat's firm- his main business is taking care of marine diesels in the Seattle boat basis and has very little time to be handling antiques.. ( You need a spare engine for parts-especially the cast iron ones)

Hello - I need to replace the alternator on my 18 hp 2HG engine. Does anyone know which alternators (e.g. Yanmar, Beta etc.) might fit?
Thanks, Chris.

HI Folks,

Just wondering if I should be concerned when my 1976 Sabb2hg produces a little white smoke on each stroke when up to running temperature. Its not much and the engine seems to be running well and starts up first time everytime. I overhauled the top end last winter. Any thoughts?
Sometimes i wonder if this smoke actually steam but it appears to be running at the correct temp.
There's no sign of leaking diesel. All fixtures and fittings have been torqued and re - torqued after running.
I have quite a large loop in my exhaust hose before its reaches the transom. Could this affect the running of the engine?

Thanks in advance.

Mick

White smoke is a problem found under several engines
Here is Robert's comment in Perkins 6.354

"White smoke can be related to cold running or coolant leaks. Does it use coolant or does coolant smell contaminated? If always appears after 30 mins, does appearance correspond to increase in engine temps? Could be a sign that increased pressure in cooling system as temps increase is causing leakage into cylinders. "

If you replace the head gasket, have the head checked for flatness- I had to have my 2H grown flat- but it had not gotten to the white smoke stage. Make sure you re torque a few times after installation and running hours- see service manual- 79FT.ls using a good torque wrench and follow the correct sequence -page 40.
look on this site for others's comment on how many hours after initial installation for the second check on the torque. DO NOT SKIP THIS.

Thanks very much jim.

I had the head overhauled and skimmed so Im assuming its flat. I replaced head gasket also.

With manual in hand, I checked the torque after about 5 hrs of motoring and the smoke reduced after re torque. I was surprised with how much play there was in the bolts! Quite a bit!

After another 5 hrs I checked head bolts again and found more re torquing required. All the bolts are new so perhaps there is some stretching going on.

So while its running very well, there still is a little smoke on each stroke, Appears to increase as temp increases. I'm thinking it could be 1 - a small leakage into cylinders 2 - faulty torque wrench.

I'll motor gently on for another few hours and see how I go. Perhaps one more re torque with another wrench. I will let you know how I get on.

Thanks very much!

Mick
