What do you have on Brown and Talbot and Mianus. I just got a 1 cylinder 2 stroke Brown and Talbot and a 5 hp MandB Mianus.

This 1913 catalog gives a little history to first year Mianus made eng's.

Note no oilers in 1913, and exhaust manifold is on opposite side from your eng and the one in the picture i posted few days ago, obviously earlier engs, i'll try to find when this change took place

This is the first I have noticed the city as Stamford. I assumed they were always in Mianus.

This is 1911, i believe the singles came out with updated model in 1912, yours is 1912 or older !

Oilers are different, your eng probably in between 1912-- 1906 ?? what do you think??

this is 1902 Mianus, no side manifold and four holed flywheel.

Brown and talbot is rare, a horizontal Brown and talbot has to be very rare??

this is from Hiscock's 1906 edition, previous edition was 1902 so picture is probably somewhere in between 1903=05 ???

Head bolts and primer go through brass hat??

I had a good laugh when first going through Wendel's yellow book he states "Mianus started out in 1887 as Mianus Electric Co." This of course is not true. Palmer Bros. started out as Mianus Electric Co. in 1887. I have never found any evidence that there was any connection between the two companies other than the fact they both started out in Mianus, CT. Palmer Bros. started their move in 1901 and moved completely to Cos Cob in 1907. Mianus moved to Stamford in 1907. Raynal Bolling visited their plant in the early 1920s and said they had no foundry. Their foundry work was farmed out. Mianus went out of business in about 1954. They made a long line of diesel and mutiple cylinder gas engines. Again Wendel didn't understand that Mianus Diesel Engine Co. of NY, NY was the same company as the Stamford company and the engines were made in Stamford. At the Arcadia, MD. Antique engine show a couple of years back a large 6 cylinder Mianus ca 1940s was in the auction. Unfortunately like so many salt water marine engines it was so badly rotted that there were no bidders. I didn't have the means to move it much less store it so don't know what happened to it. Only mutiple cylinder Mianus I have seen since the early 1930s when an uncle had one in his boat. Ernie certainly has a nice looking Mianus. The relics I have are all in need of major repair. Some beyond hope of repair.

I have a Mianus of the same style as yours. I think it is probably a 3 hp. My engine does not have the side tag, but has a small tag on the ignitor trip linkage. That small tag doesn't have a place for a serial no. It has the spoked flywheel. I also do not have the brass head cover. Did they all have them? Wonder when they went from the solid flywheel with 4 holes, to the spokes?

Bring yours to Calvert. I am bringing mine. Mine also has the tag on the ignitor trip rod like yours. I think they all had the top cover. It just slides on. Most likely the first part to "go overvoard" when it wouldn't start.

The 1909 ad above say's Main office Mianus Conn.
The 1911 ad above says stamford Conn.
Move must have been 1910 ??

Somewhere I have an article about Mianus and that one says the factory moved to Stamford in 1907. I have other material that says the office was in New York so take your pick. Where does the truth really lie.

I have a multiple cylinder Mianus. Each independent cylinder (2) is connected by a common crankshaft. Each cylinder has a nameplate with consecutive serial nos., Mianus Motor Works, Stamford Conn. 71/2 hp. It was used on a tug boat on the Ouachita River, Monroe, Louisiana. It was used to rescue people during the 1927 flood. Please respond if interested.

A friend has a 4 cyl Mianus estimated to be a mid late 20's marine engine. It has a large tapered bell-housing like cover over the tail shaft with the word MIANUS plainly cast in large letters. Info/photos/ads are pretty scarce. Has anyone seen or have a similar Mianus or more importantly ads or specifications for this model??

Hello,
Walt Ansel here from Mystic CT. About a month ago I bought a very original 3hp Mainus.( #39177) With advice from Scott at Mystic, I got her running after replacing the head and manifold gaskets. I've got a few leaks in the repaired (brazed) manifold that will need attention.
My hope is to install her in an 18' Swampscott dory that my father built (like a Toppan). Hope to cool with a copper tube keel pipe & fresh water.
How old is this motor? I'm guessing 1919 or so.
