After much tinkering, I've finally gotten my P60 to run well. Now, however, it will start up and run smoothly for 8-10 minutes, then just die. I've got spark to the plugs, so I'm pretty sure the ignition system is OK. I think the problem is the fuel pump. The pump runs initially, but when the engine dies and I try to restart it, the pump is not running. The pump is wired to the positive terminal of the ignition coil, so it has power whenever the ignition is on. So it should run whenever the ignition key is tuned on, right? I know some people wire the fuel pump to an oil pressure switch so that it only runs when the engine is running. In fact that's the way mine used to be wired, but I changed it because the engine used to be so hard to start cold, and I thought that might be part of the problem.
I also thought my current problem might be due to the fuel tank not venting properly, so that a vacuum could form in the tank as fuel was withdrawn. But I took the cap off the gas filler pipe to make sure the tank was vented and still have the same problem, so I don't think that's it.
Am I on the right track thinking this is due to a bad fuel pump? |

The vent to your gas tank might be clogged and a vacuum is forming in the gas tank. You can check by cracking the fuel cap open when it stops and see if you get a "woosh" as air goes in.
Another thing is the coil. Coils are rarely a problem but when they do start to fail, and it isn't a complete shutdown, they tend to act up after being warmed up as opposed to when they are cool.
Check those items first |
