Ferro made two slightly different styles of the same single cylinder outboard, ca, 1917-19 or so. The only difference is the muffler. Mine has the earlier type which comes in three pieces. The later one had what appeared to be a single piece muffler. I've never seen this version. Will wait for photo You should have the magneto and it should have a good spark. Clean the points mechanism if it doesn't. Set points at .020 (worked on my Ferro). |

The earlier muffler on the Ferro is a one-piece aluminum casting. The multi-piece brass muffler came later. I also have a "Type A" Ferro. I'm in the process of tearing it down so that it can be gone through to fix up the mechanics. It was torn apart more than 40 years ago then packed up and left that way. The previous owner didn't get it 100% taken apart, now that I'm into it I can see what stalled him (lower unit). Seth - is your Ferro the gear-driven magneto type, or is it a battery-ignition model? Hope to see what you've got there. Best, Chris S

To correct a couple of other items posted by Stephen Fox; The correct vintage for Ferro outboards is 1914-17. The exhaust is not the only difference between motors, and it is the early motors that use the one-piece aluminum exhaust, not the other way around. The three-piece brass muffler assembly goes on later models. The 1914's used a lower unit with a solid fin or skeg. Sometime either late in 1914 or in time for the 1915 models Ferro motors sported a "skeleton" skeg that had an opening through the fin, which was reduced to two struts that joined each other at the ends. They also switched carburetors somewhere along the line, the early ones used 5-ball Kingstons, but many of the Model 7's used a four-ball instead. Most Ferro's have a small double-looped casting fastened onto the tiller handle, this is for hooking up ropes that allowed the operator to rope steer the boat. Some of these little steering rope castings are bronze, others are cast iron. Hope this helps, if anybody bothers to read it. Best, Chris S |

Hi Chris, thanks for the posting - it reminded me that I have a Ferro tucked away that needs some work. Someone had tried to remove the piston through the spark plug hole using a punch, so I now need a 2.625" piston, the mag is also missing and I do not know what a proper replacement would be. The rudder and lower unit are also gone, in my travels I have picked up a rudder and a lower unit that I believe are for a Wisconsin. I was going to adapt them to the Ferro - but someone may need them for a Wisconsin and I would rather have the Ferro parts anyway, I have included them in the picture for reference only. I would appreciate any information on where I could find parts. Chris, if you think there is an interest, feel free to post this on the Rowboat Motors site. Thanks, Phil

Phil, I posted this on the Yahoo site that Jack Craib runs, hopefully that might generate a response for you. I believe an Evinrude rowboat motor piston will fit your motor, but you'd have to make sure that the skirt port position is correct to allow your motor to run. I know the Ferro uses a Bosch magneto, the lettering on one sample picture I have says "ZAI red 3T", if that helps any. This code appears over top of the point cover. A photo on Jack Craib's Ferro page shows you what the mag looks like http://www.caille.8m.com/rowboat/Ferro/Ferro-P-2094-Type-A/pages/IMG_3086.html Here's a link to Jack Craib's Ferro page. http://www.caille.8m.com/rowboat/Ferro/ferro-index.html Hope it helps.
