I need to know which way the piston goes in a Gray 3 h.p. model "u" serial #3u28176. Does the ridge on top of piston go towards the flywheel or the output shaft? |

Generic rule. Deflector goes "on the opposite side of the exhaust port". |

Now I have another question about the same engine.
On the top of the timer cover there is a small threaded hole next to where the spark wire connects. What goes there and what is the purpose? |

A little twist to open oiler goes there. Just twist and stick the snout of your oil can in and give s squirt or 2.

Thanks for your reply.
My Gray is nearly complete and I will post pics when it is.
About you reply, I understand it’s a place to oil the timer but not sure how it looks. Could you please send me a close up of that little thing? I'm a retired machinist so I will make one.
Also I need the little cover that goes over the needle valve adjustment on my Schebler model D. This seems to be the only thing on this engine that is not a standard thread. I wonder why? |

The cover you need is 5/8th 11 thd.
I will get a pic of the oil cap as soon as I can. |

Thanks,I'm not sure we're talking about the same thing on the carb. The cover that's missing is 3/4-18 which is odd. My carb is the same as the one in the pic you included in your post. I've tried to include pics but I keep getting error message saying file is too large. I set my camera to "basic" which is the lowest quality but still doesn't work. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? |

Yes you are correct the cover is 3/4 I was digging in the cobwebs. As to where to get one just keep looking all Schlebler carbs 1 inch and up used them.
Pics of the oiler open and closed. The spare engine for my boat has a simple flip top oiler like you would see on an electric motor bearing.
