I have a Yanmar IGM10 diesel 2005 model in my timber yacht. it possiblly just needs rings, but there lies a story which I cannot seem to get any mechanics to suss. This very serviced engine (every trip) fitted in 2006 has 800 hours up and has never used oil or blown smoke. (Point 1. It has also never been able to reach peak revs. even in idle with control cables unattached max. revs 3800) As you throttle on it reached 3800 and the throttle continued on without an increase in revs. Note please, yes I have ensured full fuel flow, removed fan belt, etc.etc. engine starts and runs perfect otherwise. Recently returning from a cruise I needed to dodge some oncoming weather went to full throttle (3800 revs) 40 minutes later without me adjusting anything the engine roared into a 4600 rev. range , the boat soared ahead at a tremendous pace and then behind me a massive cloud of blue smoke. I brought it back to 3800 revs no smoke engine fine. twice more I tried it and same thing. When back in port noticed the transome covered in oil from the exhaust and oil level well down on dipstick. Point 2. in 800 hours there was no fuel return at all, now I do get fuel return. Have demonstrated it several times since and now its blowing light smoke through the rev range then at 4200 / 4500}} massive plumes of blue smoke. I will have the engine repaired professionally I just need to know is there another concern here?

Hi Peejayw,
As a Marine Engineer I have read you account of the problems, first of all the non return from the injector and the blue puffs from the exhaust would suggest the injector needs a rebuild,
The oil on the other hand is odd, I would not think at 800 hrs you would need rings unless there is a broken one there or a crack in the piston ? that needs checking, otherwise I would take the head off and have it crack tested and the valve seats checked for cracks, reground and or replaced as required, while it is off the guides should be checked for wear as well, your answer has to be there somewhere,

Thank you keith for your reply, I guess my confusion could be attributed to the fact all this happened without prior indication of anything going wrong and suddenly I can reach full revs. allbeit with clouds of blue oil smoke and a loss of oil but quite strangely not a loss of power?
