Hello, new to this forum. I am just about to buy an old Westerly Cirrus but it has a seized MD1. The local mechanic says forget it as parts are unavailable. Is this correct, or (l hope) can l strip this old unit down and rebuild. Where can l get parts for these older units? |

Good luck with the MD1B. Parts are available from volvo but are expensive. Is the piston seized or the transmission? I have an MD1B and am still working on it. Only remaining problem is with the governor/fuel injection. I can't get it to idle satisfactorily. Where are you located? I will try to send the shop manual to you via separate e-mail. Hi Allatsea, Well parts are available for the MD 1 but they do take a bit more finding, but the MD 2 parts are freely available, although like any Volvo they are pricy, but you can pick up a running MD 2 engine for about £500 or £600 or less in good nick, I would advise you to do this as they give you more power and are smoother, I am a bit surprised you have an MD 1 in your boat as the standard was the MD 2 from Westerlys, if you do go this way try and get an MD 2C Hope this helps Keith Inglis. Does anyone have a history of the Volvo engines, ie MD1, MD2 etc with horse power and dates. I keep seeing the MD reference but have no idea of the lineage? I would like to know about all the later versions. |

I am about to take out a MD1B from my boat, more or less everything works, I am only taking it out to replace it with a much lighter petrol engine to improve my ability to race in class. It would be a shame to break it up but I guess that most of the parts are common to the MD1 and MD2 ranges, eg it has a Dynastart, I have seen the price of a reconditioned one (expensive to say the least) so as long as I got a reasonable contribution I would be open to offers. I think I would be interested at a price which would be competitive with the one mentioned above obviously the advantage to you would be that you could drop it straight in either replacing the gearbox or not as the case might be. |
