Hello, concerning a 4 cylinder L-head engine, wondering what the conventional thinking is concerning whether one should just let the water flow from the head and enter the exhaust pipe unrestricted or to install some restriction to it to allow some minor water pressure to build in the head, before it is released into the exhaust. One would think that a little water pressure might relieve air pockets in the head and also allow the water to remain in the block and head to do its work. Thanks. John

My experience with small 4 cylinder engines, is that they run cool because of the amount of water that is pumped through the block when running.

But I also found that on bigger 6 cylinder engines ( eg Buchanan Meteor or Rocket - based on a Hercules block - also used by Chris Crafts) they need all the cooling they can get.
I suspect this is because the two engine sizes use about the same size water pump i/e/ the same water flow volume.

Inevitably any restrictor like a valve will clog and you will certainly over-heat the bigger engine.
I don't use restrictors on my boats simply because they are one more thing that can go wrong.

I have a 1968 with 2 440's that run a little hot .
Trying to find the water hose lay-out to see if it's right (it is a closed system)
