I have a Universal Flexifour. All the data I find says it should be a model B,C,F,FA?? the brass data tag says mine is a type N B-X?? Ser# 18836. I would appreciate some help to identify HP? year, etc. I want to restore it to run good and maybe go to some antique engine shows. Aloha Dave M |

I had trouble with the above link. If you also have trouble try this. http://hessmarine.ca/ Scroll down to Universal History near the bottom. |

I have a Type N Universal engine that Northern Pump coupled up with a gear pump. There are photos of it in this Topics section. Your post is the only other reference I have seen to the term Type N as opposed to the term Model N. Perhaps Universal used the terms interchangeably? The attached page was sent to me from a 1927 Universal catalog. Note the reference to 'The New Universal Flexifours' and that all four variations depicted are of the Model N. My Universal has 'Ricardo Head' and the November 13, 1923 patent date cast into the head. It has a lot in common with the model N engines shown here so I expect mine is in the same 1927 age range.

I too have a model N (1927 - 1928) that I'm currently rebuilding. I'm at the point of putting the crank back in and was checking out the routing of the oil lines to the main bearings (rods are splash). The oil is feed from the exterior mounted piston oil pump through porting in the block and into the crank case. From this point it "T's" with one copper line running to the rear main cap and forward with copper to the front (flywheel end). This is elbowed back into the block but this porting goes nowhere!! I have poked and proded and even hooked up compressed air to confirm this. There is no line running to the forward main cap and infact this cap isn't drilled or tapped for a fitting. Am I missing something??? Also, I'm in need of a magneto. Anyone know the model used on this Flexi? |

I spoke with a friend who is a marine mechanic however not at all familiar with older engines. He brought up a interesting concept/idea about this oil line than goes nowhere. A means of pulsation dampening or a reservoir due to the oil pump being a piston type rater than a continuous flow rotary? If true, the big question still remaining is how does the front bearing get oil??? |

I feel I've answered my own question/mystery regarding the oil line running up to the flywheel end main bearing. I found a steel plug way down in the drilled hole in the block. This plug has a flat ground on it's side to meter the oil flow. This was completely blocked off and I was lucky to find it. From this metered port, oil goes into a reservoir over the main bearing and gravity feeds it. I was able to drive the plug out, clean it up and reinstall it. I am looking for a Zenith T3X carb. |

I have 2 old marine engines setting in my boat house and would like to know there value and some information. What follows is from the name plate on these 2 motors. Both have been in this boathouse for the last 60 or 70 years and has been passed to me from my grandfather who died in the late 1950's and was a boating user on Lake Huron. 1. Universal Flexifour Marine, Universal Type M, Serial No 12937, Built by Universal Motor Co, Oshkosh, Wi. Question: What is its approx value and what might be the hp and year built? 2. Mullins Marine Engine, hp 6, 2 cyclinder, Model 1910, Desiged by E.W. Roberts, M.E., for the W.H Mullins Co., Salem, Ohio. Question: What is its approx value? I assume the Model is the year built. |
