Rumely, often misspelled Rumley, was in the heavy tractor/ag eqpmt business. In the Mar 1912 issue of Int'l Marine Eng'g is an article re' the Rumely Oil (Kerosene/paraffin) marine engine, a 125 HP vertical inline 9x12 "...the smallest of a line of large heavy duty marine engines, built principally for mercantile marine service and for large yachts...m'f'd by the M. Rumely Co, La Porte, Indiana". While no production has been verified, one person recalled mentions of more than one Rumely engine in boats on the lake there John A Secor, a marine engine builder, was then emplyed by Rumely, and the assumption is that these marine engines were his brainchild, but that general financial conditions after 1912/13 prevented production of more than a, or a few, prototypes. Can anyone add anything.?? Any comments and/or suggestions appreciated. Many thxx!! Bud |

* Rumely Company is in my data base of old marine engine mfgrs, several references as to their marine engines and I have seen an operators hand book for the Rumely marine engines. When Secor went to Rumely in 1908 He worked with an employeee William Higgins to develop the Secor - Higgns Kerosene carburetor and water injection system that was the key to using kerosene as a practicle and less expensive engine fuel ! Sure would like to see one of these engines or a good photo ! * |

Richard: I haven't seen any of the Rumely catalogs etc that refer to marine engines, but others have advised they show only horizontal engines, not any vertical types. I don't have a scanner, and I've not had much luck with a digital camera, but if you'll email a mailing adds([email protected]) I can send a legible copy of the article, which has more tech info and a couple basic line drawings. This journal was published in London; I don't know if Secor managed any coverage in US magazines/journals, assuming these were Secor's hopes. |
