went to buy a schooner hull (a long story) and came home with a 500lb 40 year old diesel engine on a pallet ( I wish that I had purchased the schooner as well.) Just moving the engine was an adventure. It is a Volvo MD2B serial number 0767. I believe that it is a 1970. It has a belt driven starter, and an alternator. My plan was to determine the health of the engine- compression, corrosion etc and determine if it was worth salvaging. I went to our local diesel shop (the guy that services all the lobster boats etc) and asked if he had a spare junk injector . I explained what I was doing and indicated that I needed the injector to build a compression gauge adapter. He basically said don't bother, just start it. So I put a new fuel filter and water pump impellor on, changed the oil, primed and bled the injection system, soaked the pistons in wd40 for a couple weeks and then cranked away! (on the first start a big mouse nest was coughed out of the exhaust) Notice that this is a completely mechanically injected diesel engine. No electricity required. It will run after a nuclear EMP. Next steps: 1) strip the engine, clean and paint, 2) rebuild starter (Bosch dyna- starter/generator) and alternator, 3) new seals for the injector pump, 4) reassemble 5) FIND A BOAT TO INSTALL IT INTO. I am considering rigging this as a fresh water cooled engine. Using a keel cooler. Here is the video of the second start up…. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRkR7hBT8dE |
