Now, thanks to Ernie, that my 1908 Ferro is running, I am concerned that the bolt which holds the hinged rod cap will come loose. The bolt head is drilled for safety wire but there is no place to anchor the wire, i.e., no hole conveniently placed in the con rod.

What is the consensus about wrapping the safety wire around the con rod to secure the bolt?

Thanks

Bob Price

Perfectly normal method of securing safety wire in my opinion.

That's the way my Gray was , when I got it -wire wrapped around the con rod, and even th4e wrist pin bolt had the same thisng.
- so I just did it. The original was copper wire. I used steel wire.

Bob,
Stop at your local (small) airport and pickup some .033in stainless safety wire. I foot or so will give you some extra. Handy to ream out small holes etc. If you can't find any let me know. Also Bob Long is an aircraft mechanic. He will have some for sure.
Hope this helps
Ernie

Well this isn't safety wire but cannot figure out how to start a new thread. The important thing is a long time friend called telling me he wants to sell his YT-1. It is all apart but in good shape and knowing him I have confidence whoever gets it will be able to put it back together. His name is Bernard Denney. He lives in Virginia Beach, VA. His phone number is 757-463-4422. I am in no way part of this deal it is strictly between the buyer and seller. I can only say Bernie is a man of integrity.

OK folks - thanks for all the advice. I got some steel wire and did my best to emulate what I learned in the Marine Corps about proper safety wire techniques.

But we would have never just wrapped the wire around the con rod in an A/C engine. There was a small boss on the con rods with a drilled hole with the edges of the hole carefully chamfered, used to anchor the rod cap bolts. But A/C engines turn a bit faster than antique marine engines. :o)

Thanks again.

RBP
