Hello Everyone, life seems to have been very busy the last little while, but I just had to go see this engine when I heard about it - and what do you know, it seems to have followed me home. This Hawboldt 15 HP 1947 Model, has had a hard time later in life, it was taken apart several owner's ago and over the ensuing owernership transfers some pieces have been lost. Pieces like all the bolts and the carbs! I have attempted to re-build with all the parts I do have for picture taking purposes (and to have some fun). This engine has a thrust bearing at both ends, but no eccentric at the back end, and it is rumoured that this engine had 3 carbs. I am wondering if it is possible to have had ring gears installed from new for electric start in 1947. Also, does anyone know what did the V pulley behind the fly wheel drive? Is this the proper timer? Should there be a manifold of either cast or built up with pipe fittings; and what size carbs would have been used? Also, would it have had a plunger water pump or a gear water pump and how would it have been mounted? Any info from anyone out there would be most appreciated. Thanks, Phil |

WOW! What a great engine. Thanks for sharing. Could the V-pulley be for a round belt to drive a mechanical oiler? It looks like the rear bearing casting was also drilled on top to support a vertical shaft...could the timer be moved from front to back or was that just for the greaser? Is there a chance that a gear waterpump ran inline below the timer similar to the Foreman? Hope you're dealing with this heat alright. Blair |

I am guessing that it is 3 cylinders of my 5 hp single. http://www.oldmarineengine.com/discus/messages/1/95443.html If that is the case it will use 3 1 1/4 inch Schlebler carbs. You can definatly make it run that way. As to the pulley I see no trace of the usual eccentric that Hawboldt used for the water pump so may it was to run a belt drive one. Or maybe it was to run a generator. Hope this helps Ernie |

Hi Blair and Ernie, I can't see that they would have a belt driven water pump. The hole on the back bearing is actually 1/2" coarse threaded - it might hold something, but there is still no eccentric. The hole at the front has an approx. 1" diameter ball bearing inserted in it. Thanks for the carb info, is your water pump driven by an eccentric or bevel gears? Looking forward to finding out even more about these engines. I have checked out the suggested posting and have discovered the company is still in business but does not respond to any engine inquiries. So we will have to keep researching on our own. Phil |
