Last Saturday we had a gathering of the bateaus for a 5 hour round trip. I removed the St. Lawrence from my boat and installed an 8hp Nadler for this trip. I would have been running all out to keep up with the pack and didn't want to punish the 100 year old motor that way. Jim Delahoussye does a good job of describing the trip here. http://riverlogue.blogspot.com/ |

Hi JB - how did the boats stand up to the work out - especially David P's boat - it was probably the oldest one there. It's a grand tribute to Mr Ory to have the trip take place - he's a one of a kind guy. MIro |

I guess I had the most trouble. I launched and the carb started flooding(carb from the St. Lawrence). Took it apart to find the float split at the screw hole. This is one of the first plastic floats that were offered. It was spongy, they've since reformulated them to resist alcohol better. We started on our way and the engine was running pretty erattic at the speed we were traveling. Increasing speed seemed to smooth it out, asdid lifting up the timer handle. I didn't want to stop to trouble shoot because the entire parade would stop if someone had trouble. I removed the timer cover and could see some arcing between the brush and contacts. This was one of the early Lockwood timers with the rotating brush and contacts in the micarta ring. A bottle of water poured into the timer leveled things out for a few minutes. When we stopped I was able to see the problem, the brush was worn to conform to the ring, it was riding a little high and rubbing on the insulating ring as well as the timer contact. Scraping some of the insulation off with my pocket knife made a world of difference, but running against a 5mph current for several hours constantly missfiring consumed a lot of fuel and I had to borrow a gallon to finsh the trip. I'll remove the brush and reshape to a crown, so it has to contact in the middle. One of the other boats had a little trouble with trash in the fuel but no one had to use a tow rope. David's boat performed well, he proabably has more long trips on it than the rest of us. |

It sure was a privelage to be included on this trip. My camera got a good workout. In addition to the post on Riverlogue that J.B. mentions above, there is an amateur video (about 9 minutes) that lets you get a feel for the trip and the sound of the engines. All four horsepowers were there, I believe. The video is on YouTube under the name "Pilgrimage to Bayou Chene" and it's now on the Riverlogue blog as well. Take care folks, Jim |

Here's the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLGnEYTCAl0 I love the forward, reverse and neutral demonstrated by Mr Ory - he's a one-of-a-kind guy. He sure is a treasure for he bateaux community. And I feel privileged to have visited with the boatmen and gotten to know them. miro miro |
