I recently acquired a 1928 6 cylinder Studebaker engine with a marine exhaust manifold. The engine was stored for many years in a basenemt in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. This engine is reportedly a spare engine for a wooden boat of some type.
I am searching for information on the use of Studebaker car engines as inboard power plants.
I also need price information on the value of such engines. I realize that price depends on condition, restored or unrestored, etc. But even a ball-park range would be helpful. |

Seems I read somwhere that the graymarine 6-90 model is based on the Studebaker"6". Your engine is probably worth more to a Studebaker car collector than a boat restorer. |

What's a Champion 6 cyl engine worth, that's still in the crate? It was rebuilt and crated in 1958. It has a new carb on it. |

Stude marine engines are very rare. I tracked down a V-8 "marine engine" in PA a few years ago but It was home-modified. I have seen info there was a brief period in the 50's when Studebakers were converted by an outfit in Michigan. I surmise there was a 225 cid class in marine racing that was populated by Graymarine and Chrysler flathead sixes. The early 1955 Studebaker 224 V8 would have suddenly dominated this class. Naturally, the 225 class then got bumped to something that would accomodate the Chevy 265 and presto, no need for Studebaker's high-revving, tough little V8. |

Greetings and happy holidays fellow motor heads!
The hull card for one of my boats calls out that it was delivered from the Algonac factory with a Studebaker 6 cylinder engine. This is for a 1929 Chris Craft Model 3, 24' triple cockpit runabout with a ship date of July 3rd, 1929. The hull card does not say anything else about the engine other than it had Delco Ignition and a Delco fuel pump. No HP or model were stated. I do not have this engine unfortunately.
Many people in the Chris Craft community have been very surprised by this as well.

I am working on a history of the Saint Paul Yacht Club (until 1934 it was the Saint Paul Motor Boat Club),founded in 1912. I would like to know what kinds of small engines were used for houseboats, cruisers and other pleasure craft on the Mississippi at Saint Paul from, say, 1900 to 1910 or so. We hope to have a book ready to celebrate our centennial. |

1928 and 1929 are the earliest I have seen any record of Studebaker being used for marine applications. As stated in an above post, they are quite rare in the marine world.
As I am still trying to do research on the original type and size of engine for one of my boats (the 1929 Chris listed above), anything you find would be of interest to me.

Hi
I have a 259 Studebaker boat motor. It has full marinised exhaust with Studebaker inprints. I built and worked the motor 20yrs ago and it hasn't been run since. it comes in a old clinker ski boat with trailer. Any idea what it would be worth? |
