The following came in by email from Alex. I will direct him here to post other photos and information and look for feedback about what it might be...
quote:Hi...I am trying to identify this engine...? Any help would be appreciated...Any chance it can be posted on your site for others to look at and hopefully ID it? I have pictures of all sides...Thanks. Alex

Alex You had sent me photos of this engine and with the holiday distractions I didn't get an answer to you, I believe its a Fox engine made by Dean Mfging Co. Newport, Kentucky Circa 1915. they made about 20 different models and I haven't been able to find an ad with that specific engine in it. Is there any writing on the carburetor ? |

The bottom of the cylinders where they bolt to the bottom half sure look like Rochester. I will post pics of one later Hope this helps Ernie |

Richard, I don't see what is unique about the gears or bracket. What am I missing? Here is the Rochester pic.

Ernie Thats an outstanding Old Rochester, looks in excellent condition ! Maybe post a photo of the front of flywheel and port side ? Looked through my data and found this 1910 ad, claims 12 yrs of competition so dates this mfgr at least 1898 ?? The new style eng like yours was put on the market in 1906 and remained untill 1912 as far as I can find. The MotorBoat eng mfgr index 1913 does not list Rochester ? It appears that the 6 yrs these engs were made the intake and exhaust manifolds were on the port side ! 1906 ad 1912 ad The Rochester's 5 bolt per side pattern on the circular cyl base and casting shape with manifolds opposite side seems to me to be a different casting than Alex's eng above ?? These two other photos of Alex's eng maybe help ? |

Richard, I was refering to shape (profile) where the cylinder bolts to the crankcase bottom. Where was Fox manufactured? I would not be suprised if they have something in common. Designer? engineer? draftsman? |

Wendel lists Dean and Fox as independent companies in Covington KY. Claims Dean combined with Waterman in 1907 then consoladated with Fox Reversable Gas Engine Co. around 1910 |

I am skeptical of Wendel when it comes to marine engines. For example he claims Mianus started out as Mianus Electric Co. in 1897. Actually it was Palmer Bros that started out in 1887 as Mianus Electric Co. Mianus Conn. making telephone hardware. I have never been able to pin down a real start date for Mianus Motor Works, Mianus, Conn. I do believe they move to Stamford in 1907. I have never found any connection between Palmer Bros. and Mianus Motor Works. Nothing in the historical society in Cos Cob turned up. Mianus and Cos Cob are so close together it appears to be the same town when you visit the place. When you look at the Mianus castings nothing resembles in any way Palmer There engine designs did not come from the same drawing board in my opinion for what its worth. Mianus went on for many years makeing marine engines including diesels but eventually went belly up in 1954 I believe. When I brought a number of marine engine points to Wendel's attention he did not give me the courtesy of an answer. I think his book is a monumental work but one that needs to be taken with a grain of salt here and there. |

Wendell's yellow book has been reprinted, and was selling directly from the author for $50. It is a must own for the serious collector, and it has quite a bit of marine engine stuff in it. Wendell has had a stroke, and I doubt if the book will ever get updated, which is a real shame, because it sure could use an update. |

This engine is now mine. It belonged to Bill Chester in Duncan previously, if that rings any bells with anyone I'd appreciate hearing. Would be nice to find a water pump, though chances are slim I guess. |
