I'm writing this on behalf of my friend in Finland. He came across an old marine engine. It's a 2 cylinder 4 cycle engine. The builders tag is in place and it has the following text: Palmer Bros L2 Cos. Cob. Conn. USA. The tag has no serial number. There is a stamp 3521H at the cylider flange. We are not sure if this is a serial number, or something else.
This engine looks very strange in many ways: It has mixed sidevalve construction. The intake valves are over the exhaust valves. The intake valves are atmospheric, camshaft is exposed with roller followers up to exhaust valve rockers. It has two spark plugs/cylinder, one between the valves and the other at the top of cylinder. With this engine came also a carburator Ford NH. This carb has cast iron body. Could this be the original one, because the flange in intake manifold and carb do not fit together?

I'll try to get better photoes about this engine within a few days. Lubricators and some other small bits and pieces are not shown in these pictures.
At the moment my friend is studying his treasure: How old it is? When was it made? How does it really work? How it has looked originally? Missing and replaced parts? What's original and what's replaced? Ignition system is also a mystery!
Anyway, it seems to be possible to get this engine running again. That's why all information that you might have is welcome!

And still they turn up! Could we hear where and how it was found, and what sort of boat it was used in?
Dick will give you the info on the engine, but I'm curious about your friend calling it the "Alaskan Palmer"; did this engine make its way west from Alaska somehow? |

Eric Johansen up in Alaska is doing an incredible resurection of a Palmer L-2. We are looking forward to more detailed photos from Pekka Soukka.
It does appear this L-2 has had the crankcase exstentions which supported the original reverse gear cut off. Apparently that was done to add the crank, chain drive portion. Hopefully the original reverse gear may still be with the engine. While Eric has the reverse gear he doesn't have the linkage with the shift lever.
He needs some better info on precisely how that portion was constructed. He can then make the missing pieces.
We are waiting with great interest what new knowledge this rare find may turn up. |

There seems to be some confusion. There is an L-2 in Finland and it has features on it which Eric in Alaska needs details of as his engine in missing so much. Sorry if I didn't make that clear. |

I am a Palmer L-2 engine owner from Finland. My hobbies is boat and Stationary engines.
I am sorry because the time has passed so many years from my last post . Then my friend Pekka Soukka was linked here.
