bought an ealry gray u end of last year got it all taken apart and ready to paint now a month or two has pasted
not sure witch is the correct way for the piston to be inserted not s ure if the ridge on te piston goes towars the flywheels or aft end
I want to finish up the cast iron assenbly befor i paint the final coat
also looking for in fo on timer carb linkage as this was missing carb is kingston 5 ball timer is above the pump
also is the crank oiled or greased

The downward slope of the piston goes towards the exhaust port |

well the exhaust ports are on both sided
i have the piston in with the narrow side towards the carb port and the slope heading towards the port that is open tothe carb is this correct?? |

In most early Gray engines, the exhaust port is on the left side when you are standing in front of the flywheel looking at the engine.
The exhaust port also usually has a 2 bolt flange type arrangement to attach the exhaust piping.
The intake has a pipe thread.
The intake port is lower down on the cylinder wall that the exhaust port, by about 1/4 in or so.
I'll see if I can resurrect some pictures tomorrow of my cylinder and post them.

miro my engine has a threaded port for intake and exhaust the ower ports are right in from the carb the upper ports are two at teh exhaust port and two at he crank case vent there is a cover over this venting area
i jsut want to make sure its right befor i button it all up |

I think , then the two ports that have the covers over them are the intake ports. The covers mean that these are the passages into and out of the crankcase for the fresh air fuel charge.
The piston should have the steep side facing these ports.

miro you have me all confused again
the port that have the cover are in line to the euxaust ports
shouldnt the smaller side of the ridge on the piston be toward those ports directly in from the carb |

You say you have an early "U". Does it look like this?
If so the exhaust is out the back and the intake is in the front (transfer ports) are under the round cover. The piston goes in with the slope towards the back.

if im understanding you the intake port is under the round cap not the port almost straight in from the carb |
