While we have been talking about some Australian engines ,some of the lesser known makes ,I thought i would ask the question regarding an engine i have .
It is badged Hornet . A single cyl ,two stroke ,nothing really special about it except that from information gathered in my research it would appear that there were only 8 ever made . The maker was Horn and Hansen ,Drumoyne NSW |

In Seacraft I came across an advert for one. Currently, I've been going through every Seacraft magazine (from 1947+) at the Australian Heritage Fleet library to gather material on all engines <10HP (including outboards - Steve) that were available in Australia. I'll post the ad within the next few days - though that is probably the same pic you have got. What other engine mags in OZ (pre and post 1947) would others suggest I examine.
For general interest I will shortly post a list of engines I have come across todate so watch this "space". |

In the inaugral 1947 issue of the Seacraft magazine there is an advert for a 3HP Hornet marine engine - likely the same as Peter's. It's taken me a few days to learn more about scanning and loading a picture on OME so here goes
I was careeful not to make the image file too large, so I aplogise if you can't read any text - of course, if it did get posted |

Yes Tim .....we both seem to be having the same problem
Re the Hornet ,I have a copy of an add for the engine and some interesting history sent to me by someone , I'll dig it out but according to this there were only about eight of the engines ever made
Now back to working out how to get that pic on , rest easy Andrew ! |

I got some help reducing the file size so hopefully you should see an ad from the inaugral 1947 issue of the Seacraft magazine for the Australian 3 HP Hornet marine engine

As the image of the ad is not clear here arethe engine features described:
2 and seven-eigth inch bore
3 inch stoke
Schebler type carburettor
Lucas magneto
5 inch clutch
1 and one-eigth inch diameter..extra long main bearings
11 inch propellor
plunger type water pump
water colled exhaust box attached to the cylinder block
bronze end bearing
full floating gudgeon pin
Manufactured by Horne and Hansen Pty Ltd, 136 Victoria Road, Drummoyne (in Sydney, Australia)
Sold for 45 Pounds plus Sales Tax, complete

Really nice set up - but what do you do to start them? Looks as if the flywheel has a protective cover around it. Do you remove that to get it going? |

Miro ......sometimes a photo can be misleading ,the rim of the flywheel is painted red ........a leather strap goes goes on the smaller diam ,next to the clutch drum . |
