Steve requested that I post the following for him. Beautiful little fiberglass lapstrake launch. It would be interesting to know if someone still has the molds for it.

He can be reached at [email protected]

I have an unknown boat with a Palmer PW27 inboard. I tried to post it, but could not resize it to fit. I would really like to find out who made this boat, and what year it was made. I only know of one other and its on antique boats. I contacted the owner, and he has the same problem I do, unknown manufacturer. I would like to register the boat, but do not want a homade title. It's a fun boat, the Palmer PW27 is a great little motor. The last two digits of the motor serial number is 44, I don't know if it was made in 1944. If you can help identify this boat I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,
Steve Francis

Thanks,

Going by the color of the engine it is a 1974 as in the last years of production Palmer only used the last digit to indicate the year. As to the boat it is neat. Never seen one like it.
Those mags usually only require a good cleaning of the points. If you have to remove it there are 2 bolts holding the mag onto the engine. The outer one has to be removed. The inner one only needs to be loosened as it is in a slot.
Parts for the mag are easily found on the net. Once you have the MFR either Fairbanks or Wico and the model number just search on google.
One source is www.magnetoparts.com
As to a Hull Identification Number "HIN" look real closly in the upper outer areas of the transom. The boat appears to be new enough "later than 1972" so it should have a HIN somewhere. If you can find the HIN the first caracters will identify the manufacturer. A list of all HIN codes is here
http://www.uscgboating.org/recalls/mic.aspx
Additional info to decode a HIN is here

Thanks Ernie, but there are no makings on the boat whatso ever. There is one for sale on Antique boat America. I contacted the person selling it, and he has the same problem. No markings or numbers. I would really like to find out the make and year to properly title it. Otherwise, I'll have to take a different route. The trailer came from Orlando Florida, so it could have been a Disney utility boat, made by Disney. Here is the link to the other boat thats for sale http://www.antiqueboatamerica.com/ab_list_boatNew.asp?Left=&Type=ViewBoat&BoatId =27231

If you think that is the case you might want to contact them. I have heard of folks doing that realted to RR equipment that was possibly made by them.
Also what year is the engine in the other boat?
Hope this helps

Could you use the engine serial number as the number for the whole boat? They do that with some tractors that have no number.

From my recent dealings with the CG or state on boats with no HIN that doesn't work, too bad as it's actually a good idea

Usually each state can issue a number that must be permanently affixed to the hull of main engine stringer. I know Wisconsin does that for old boats that have no serial number. Check with your local Department of Natural Resources and I am sure they will help you.

Captain's gig
I have a builder's color flyer for this little fiberglass launch. It was built by Tewksbury Navigation & Marine Co., 17673 Armstrong, Santa Ana, Calif.

There was one for sale recently here in Cataumet MA at Parker's Boat Yard. It belonged to a neighbor Mr Wood who died several years ago. I could be wrong but I think it had a single cylinder diesel.
In addition to the inboad version Tewksbury also built an outboard version where the motor was mounted in a well. If Parker's still has the boat I think it could be purchased cheaply as Buzzards Bay is not the best place for a tiny boat like this.

I talked to Patti at Parker's boat Yard
The one that was for sale there was a 1969. That being the case it would not have had a HIN in the new Coast Guard format. I have asked them if they know where the HIN is on the boat. If they know I will post the info here.
Also as to Tewksbury Navigation the address in Santa Anna is now all very high tec. I go down that street every day from the hotel to the office when I am in Calif for work so I really doubt that they are still there. Also I spent about an hour in the Coast Guard HIN data base searching for all kinds of combinations for Tewksbury Navigation and found nothing.
This all being the case maybe it is a 64 and not a 74???
At least now thanks to Fred you know who made yours.
Hope this helps

I heard back from Parkers
They don't remember where the HIN is on the boat and the boat is put away for the winter also the owners are not available so the location of the HIN will have to wait till spring.

Thanks to everyone for all the info. Dick Day has placed the motor to be a 1968 by the serial number. Thanks to Fred Abbe, I know who sold, or made the boat with his sales flyer. Thanks Fred for sending me copies. I'm going to frame them. I can't seem to find out any info on "Tewkesbury navigation & marine".I've reset the valves, and started buffing her for summer. I finally found a brass eagle for the transom to replace the missing bronze one. I guess I'm going to title it a 1968 Tewkesbury and use the engine number. If anyone finds out any more info please let me know.

Thanks,
Steve

I have a palmer PW-27 in my sailboat. I'v had it for 5 years and it has been reliable, but I've never been able to make it idle.If I close the throttle beyond a certain point, corresponding to 1500 to 2000 RPM in neutral, it dies. Compression is about 90 psi. Any suggestions would be much appreciated Jeff

Gonzo I have rebuilt the carb, and also cleaned it several times. It has always looked pretty clean, and has always acted the same when I put it back.I guess I'll have to look again. It does seem to be a carb problem. Thanks for the response. Jeff

There is now ( 7/17 2011) a FG Captain's Gig 12 ft. launch advertised for sale with a Palmer PW-7 on antiqueboatcanada.com if anyone is interested.
It's the first boat listed under "Launches"
