It looks to be a Gray 3-4 HP or thereabouts at 800 rpm - not one of the early ones, because of the bulbous exhaust port ( I had to enlarge the photo to see that). Estimating the boat to be 14 ft and the guy at the stern to be about 180 lbs, I suspect it was more of a ploughing match than a speed contest. If he sat up front to get the hull more level, he might be able to make 9-10 mph. Seems to me the boat is too short to get up to 14 mph with that engine. But if I were in that boat at full throttle, with lots of spark advance, between the noise of the dry exhaust and the splash of the water , I might THINK I'm doing 14 mph. Dunno if he's sitting on the tiller but he doesn't look at all happy. There look to be pull ropes for steering. It would be fun nonetheless. miro |
