I'm looking at a 1949 Lyman with a Gray 4-45. Can anyone tell me what model that is? Sea Scout, Phantom etc; I'm trying to determine if it could be original/correct for the boat. Thanks! |

Mike, can you provide the Gray serial number? Have you contacted the Lyman society yet? The Phantom 4-45 appears in My 1950 Gray owners manual. |

I asked the question on the Lyman forum too Bruce. No response yet though. I'll try and get the ser# on my next trip to boat. The boat ser# indicates it was one of the last 4 built in 1949 so a 1950 engine would be entirely possible. Thanks!! |

Mike, I have a 1950 Islander that I'm restoring. It has a Lugger Sea Scout 25hp in it, but I recently purchased a Phantom Four-45 for it. It is the same block as the Sea Scout (91 cu in) and it even has the same motor mounts. I think the Islander may have come with the 45 as an option. It will be in mine. I've heard the 25hp engine is not quite enough. Post your question to Tom Koroknay at www.lymanboats.com on the question and answer page. He has all the hull cards, so be sure to add your hull number. My Islander is A-1622, just a little newer than yours. Hopefully the boat your looking at is in good shape. Arnie |

Thanks Arnie! It's looking like that's the right engine. I'll post to TK, I have his book. The ser# ( A1428 ) says it's one of the last 3 or 4 built in 49'. Someone else responded that they had an early 50' with a Four-45 so it makes sense. I'll post to Tom and verify hopefully. The boat needs decks and shear planks but it can be saved. Thank's, Mike |

I am also in need of some info for rebuilding purposes. I have a 57 Century Viking with a 4-45 Gray Mairine engine in it. Where on the engine can I find an ID # to identify if it's a Continental or Gray Marine? The manual I obtained is for a different engine, which states the serial # is on the transmission plate. It is not. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Pete |

Mike & John, Thanks for the quick response. The data on the transmission plate is such, Gray Marine, 4-45, Eng No M2230. Is this M2230 the serial # or another type of identification #? If this is not the correct number, is there another place on the motor where I can find this identifying number? Thanks, Pete |

I'd say that's it Pete. Engine No is usually the same as Serial No. Have fun!! MM |
