I recently aquired an old single cylinder 2-stroke marine engine. The bottom half of the crankcase which also serves as the area for the 4 mounting bolts is broken on one side where two of the mounting holes were. I do not have the broken off pieces. Would using mild steel and low temp nickle/ bronze gas welding rod work for a repair. The engine is rather crude in it's casting finish so I do not think it would be hard to hide the repair. If I had some flat cast iton plate I would use it but I don't. Any help would be appreciated. I've used pure nickel in these kind of cases with a TIG torch. Also, silver solder will work ( 90% Ag, 10% Cu ) or close to that. |

the wire is 70/40 mig the patch is black iron pipe pre heat 200 and weld small spots at a time until you cover it all also their was a crack inside good luck and that is after you remove the salt

Very interesting method and impressive work. Would be nice to hear more details when you have time. Especially how you prepare the casting/remove the salt etc. |

It's an Atlantic Twin, the only engine with a heart! Note the heart shaped holes in the flywheel. Archibald |

Scott, Can you make a one or two minute video clip of the starting procedure with it running for a bit and stick it up on YouTube, please? What an inspiration! Archibald Northfield, Minnesota |

Scott, If you can get a short video clip of the engine on a CD or a DVD, you could mail the disk to me and I could put it up on YouTube for you. Most of the small digital still cameras take video with audio in a format called mpeg. That will work perfectly for YouTube. YouTube is very easy to do. First you "join" and sign up. Then you just Upload your video file to the site. Bingo, you're done. Archibald . |

Scott, Yes, it was glorious. Loved the "approved" starting method. I've yet to try that with my single 8 Hp Acadia, but will! Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mg8W6gYTXR4 When you get the timing figured out, make another video clip by all means! Great stuff. Archibald Northfield, Minnesota |
