I have a hanomag engine - which is very old - it had a keel cooling system - but that has become blocked and I have had to totally decommsion it - does anyone have ideas for an alternative cooling system. The engine is big - it has a supercharger and it powers a 65ft dutch barge
- any ideas/help appreciated

Hi Eugene,
You could raw-water cool the engine. For this I suggest you use a Jabsco pump, of which there are many varieties that can either be run via a pulley off your engine or with their own 12/24volt motor. You will also need a mud strainer. This would be the easiest way. You will draw the water in through the mud-box, around the engine and discharge over the side. This is probably the oldest system of cooling marine engines. Disadvantages are periodically having to clean out the mud-box and having raw, fresh/sea water in your system.
There are other methods, one of which I am in the process of building into my 70ft narrowboat at present. But before I can discuss this with you, I would need to know the layout of your engine room i.e. flat, free spaces below the waterline.
What is your old cooling tank blocked with? Would there be a problem with welding in a new one? What are your skills?
