Hi, I just bought a 1973 Cascade 29 sailboat with a gray marine engine in it. It's not running and I was wondering how hard it is to find parts and if it's worth saving. If I restored it, I would have a good learning experience, but if it's too hard to find parts, I should just get a used yanmar, I need this engine to work and be repairable when I am out sailing and crossing oceans.

Basically it has been sitting for over 13 years and I had my mechanic friend take a look at it today. Here's how it went.

There is alot of surface rust on the head from water trickling down there, and we went to pull the spark plugs to fog the cylindars with sea foam. HOwever the spark plugs were not cooperating and snapped off. So I don't know the compression. I would hav to have a machine should get them out and fix the threads. I would also definitely need a new exhaust upper, and alternator and who knows what else. WHat do you guys think?

If you need worldwide parts support get the Yanmar. Simple as that. Buy a stock of parts before you go too, especially a starter and alternator, gaskets, injection pump, belts etc. If it's a used Yanmar, tear it down and inspect completely. Much easier to learn about your engine on the bench than in the bilges. You can't take the mechanic with you. Make sure you have all the tools to work on it. Depending on where you're going there is no guarantee of parts or service, just a better chance.

Hi Scott with a Cascade

I have a Gray Marine in my Cascade 29 also. I am looking for parts and would like to take a look at your engine if you are in my neck of the woods.

Drop me an email if you would.
Thanks

Good morning Scott,
I have a Gray Marine in an Ericson 35 and parts have been easy to find. You can buy gaskets most anywhere, including the head, and the starter etc. can easily be rebuilt by any auto electrical shop. All of the electronics can be bought at Napa super cheap, and the pump impellers, etc., are standard issue and any marine store will carry numerous options. You can also get great support and rebuild kits for anything from these guys at 603/485-5007.
If you're mechanically inclined, this is a great, low compression engine that should be easy to maintain.
Good luck,
Don
