I have a rebuilt midget that has less then 5hrs and is on its 3rd. season since the rebuild. Since day one the motor as never run very well. first issue I had was rough running at all speeds fixed it by retightening manifold and head, trans. nexted issue was gas and oil everywhere around the motor fixed that by new manifold gasket and tighten carb with new gasket. Now the motor will not go past 1/4 throttle and when you do it gets all shaggy and bogy and smokes of exhaust out of the flywheel housing. Things i have done - rebuild carb - rebuild distributor - fuel pump - re time motor when shaft is removed the motor seems to work but shaft and coupler r in great shape and prop is too. Any ideas would be great. Thank you -feul pump |

The Midgets have no seal at the crankshaft so you'll see blue smoke coming out of the flywheel housing. As long as you have oil pressure - should be about 25-30 psi, no problem. The points and distributer are a usual source of problems. Make sure your points a clean and make good contact. The point gap should be about .020 not much more because the points cam has little throw on it.With the points closed you should get a good spark when you "ping" the points. Don't leave then closed for too long - the coil doesn't like it. The advance mechanism below the point plate in the dstributer should be clean n rust and you should be able to get the advance mechanism to work by hand using the armature above the points. The next item is the condenser ( capacitor) - if you suspect it at all - replace it. It sounds like you also have an alighnment issue with the engne and the shaft. If you take the flange bolts out, and move you r shaft back a bit, so there is a space between the flange faces, you should have not more than .010 difference in spacing on North South East West . If you do , then adjust the shims on the motor mounts to align the flanges. Carbs are usually no problem on these engine, but just to make sure, pull the small dran plug on the float chamber to get rid of any crud in there. Are you sure that the gasket between the motor and the transmission flange is good? That another place for oil to leak. Over filling the engine with oil is not good because there are no oil seals and the excess oil simple leaks into your bilge. miro |

I would suggest that you check the valve timing.Having done several of these engines it has been noted that they have no definitive cam index markings. I bet your out of time on the cam.. Good Luck Matt Fairbrass |
