I tried sanding the the block of mine and got a clould of black dust. The other parts flywheel etc.did not have any other dust, other than normal. It looks like the block had some kind of hole filler to make the casting smoother. You see farm engines where done both ways depending on who made it.Does anyone know if truscott put a filler smoother on their blocks? |

Try Roy Davies - [email protected] He has the Truscott that was posted some time ago under the Boats with Old Engine section of the Discussion group. |

Looked through "Truscott" info to see if they mentioned how they finished their engines as some mfgs did, but nothing found as to primers, fillers or paint colors. It seems in this 1898 catalog they finished their engines by covering them in their own aluminum "Jacket", with I.D plate. Classy to say the least, with a boutonniere on its lapel these engines would be accepted in the finest of society ?? |

Richard, I've seen those jackets before in Truscott catalogs... what was the purpose of them? Strickly appearance, to "hide" the ugly engine? Were they put on the engine only while the engine was not being run? I don't know if any other engine manufactures did this or not, seem strange. Larry: If you use the "keyword search" link on the left with the word "truscott" you should find the other posts including Roy's. Regards, Andrew |

Andrew : This is exact wording from catalog. " We provide ALUMINUM JACKETS or covers with our motor, which covers it completely, making it impossible to catch clothing, and preventing the throwing of oil or grease. It is the handsomest as well as the cleanest motor built". The cover was secured by machine screws at bottom on the outside of the mounting flanges. I have not seen any other Mfgs with covers on them as yet. > I sent the Gray Engine serial number and engine list to you, has it been put anywhere on web site yet ? Thanks Richard |

I have read all the truscott posts.Roys engine sure looks much smoother than mine.It seems like truscott would have wanted his engines to look good with all claims they make in the ads and provideing a splash gard too.The engine block must have had someting on it.I have sanded cars, tractors, trucks and when you hit a place where body filler has been added you get a bigger cloud of dust the same color as the filler.I don't know if I have the time to do the whole thing, mabe i'll do the big holes. |
