I've seen some posts where people have replace Zenith 61 series carbs with something else. I have a Kermath Sea Jeep with no carb (at all). Sadly, this means that my Earl Barnes designed 18' boat has been resting on the trailer waiting for a carburetor, and I know it wants to get wet :-). It was supposed to have a Zenith 63M Carb Number S1351-A but I've been looking for over a year and have yet to find one. Does anyone know of a carb that could be used as a replacement? I'm also looking for an ownsers manual for a sea jeep. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Russ |

What size SAE flange does the intake have where it joins with the carburetor? Seems to me the 63M is a typical updraft marine carburetor which came in 5 sizes. 1-1/4". 1-3/8". 1-1/2", 1-3/4" and 2" nominal bore sizes. What is the approximate bore of intake manifold and what is the center to center distance of of the carburetor mounting studs or cap screws? |

The Zenith 61 series was used on the YT-1, PW-27 and M-60 AKA P-60 Its throat size is approx 1" and mounting studs or cap screws center to center are 1.25". Typical SAE 1-1/4" two bolt flange. The 61 series was used by a numbe of marine engine makers and from outwood appearance they all look the same. Some have fixed jets and other needle valves The Zenith marking is the inner circle number. Different numbers will be found on the same appearing carburetor. I have been told these simply represent minor manufacturing engineeing changes and not major changes to the carburetor. The outer number is the part number assigned by the engine maker. 8070 is the Palmer assigned number for the Zenith 61 series carburetor. 61 series carburetors are found with different inner numbers such as 10118 with outer number AFT 122, 12547 inner number, outer AFT 122. My suggestion if your intake throat matches the 61 series carburetor try it. Whatever you do don't used the industrial version of the 61 series as it has a straight throat and no pick up tube for purging the throat of excess fuel from too much choking. It is not legal in a boat. Works great but doesn't have a flange for the backfire trap. Hope this helps. |

What can I do with a carter BB1up draft that won't start with a mechanical fuel pump but will start with an electic pump I am running on a 6 volt sys and would like to get away from the electric pump + I dont think the Coast Guard would approve of it I also was thinking of just switching to a Zenith HELP! Have you checked the preasures of the pumps? If the carb has a neopreme tip needle valve they are notorius for sticking alittle. A little more preasure might be makeing it work. |

While I am not current with the latest CG rules there are thousands of inboard engines in boats running on electric fuel pumps. What is the problem??? |

I was told that the electric pump is that of an auto type some one told me the CG wouldn't go for it + I'm using a 6 volt system cant find 6 volt fuel pumps for marine, the BB1 I had rebuilt, but just doesn't make me all worm and fuzzy if you know what I meen. I was wondering if replacement with a Zenith or other type would be better? Thanks Doug |

FYI just to let you all know that here is a small o-ring gasket on the venturi that seals it to the throat of the carb. Once installed the motor started up with the mechanical Thanks for all your input |

Hi. . I'm having a devil of a time with my updraught Zenith on my Gray Marine Express4-140. It has been stored for years. I have cleaned evrything i can. It won't start unless I pull the strangler full in. Then 3 seconds after I let go- -it dies. Even when warm it will run a little longer then try to die, but pick up for 4 seconds then try to die again. .and so on. I have changed the pump for an SU electric, the coil, the condenser. .still the same. The minute I touch the throttle . it dies. It WILL NOT tick over ( idle). . .Help. . help |

From your discription i would check the carb gasket in the area of the nose that sticks between the 2 floats. You need a good seal there or you get those problems. If the 2 parts are warped away from each other you may not get good compression there. |
