Hello I need to replace my carb and when I look at the pictures Moyer Marin has I noticed the choke and throttle are on the opposite side on the carb. The carb on my motor faces aft, I spoke to Moyer marine (Don a real nice guy and helpful) who said the carb face forward on the Atomic 4 and he has sold quite a few to Palmer owners and has never had a question about this. This leads to my question, can the carb, a zenith series 68 face either way on a Palmer M-60? So if I buy a carb from him can I mount it with the spark arrestor facing the bow of the boat rather than aft which is the way it is now so the choke and throttle are on the outside of the motor?

Thanks much in advance.

The P-60 uses the Zenith 61 series carburetor. With regard to using a diffent carburetor facing aft won't you run into a problem regarding the PCV function of the back fire trap where it connects to the valve cover of the engine. There is also a wedge insert between the carburetor and the intake manifold which is intended to compensate for the angle of the engine in the boat and the carburetor float level which needs to be considered.

Thanks Richard, interesting, there is no wedge to keep the carburetor level and there is no PCV associated with the carburetor or spark arrestor. The motor ran fine for the last 5 years until a small unnoticed water leak dripped into the flame arrestor, ultimately causing my problem. With the carburetor not being level the way it was/is, why did I not have problems, was it adjusted somehow to compensate for this? With the flame arrestor removed looking into the carburetor it looks pretty bad so I though I would replace it with a new one which maybe more difficult then I expected.

Curious, The valve cover behind the carburetor has a 1/2" el facing aft. This should have a plastic tube connected to the PCV pickup located on the face of the backfire trap. Unfortunatly too many yard mechanics tend to lose things like the leveing wedge in the bilge and there it will probably be found. I expect the engine would run quite normaly but with the carburetor not level it might want a different needle valve setting. The PCV connection not being there would not effect engine operation but neither would it pick crankcase fumes and force them out the exhaust pipe.
You can get a carb rebuild kit for the 61 from NAPA 2-1565. The 61 is an easy carburetor to rebuild. Hope you solve your problem.

The 68 carb from moyer will work great on your Palmer don"t forget the two adaptors for base and flame arrestor(leave the wedge off). I went with a true PCV valve base plate. Also about 300 engine hours ago I added freash water cooling I use an electic water puppy pump for raw water. I have had no problem with this setup. Just use an oil pressure switch to power the pump so you don't flood the exhaust.

I got the rebuild kit from NAPA, cleaned everything very well, put it back together and all I can say is what a difference, excellent throttle response, quick starts. I would highly recommend a rebuild before purchasing a new carburetor. This was the first one I rebuilt, I just followed the directions that came with it and the read all the other carburetor posts and it was a lot easier than I expected. The kit was $32.00 and about 2 hours time including removal and installation. Thanks to everyone that asked and answer a carburetor question.

Glad it worked out for you. I must have rebuilt a dozen or more using that rebuild kit and never had any trouble with the carbs after my rebuild. The secret is to make sure all passages are clean.
